OT: Coronavirus Resources - and other things to not worry about

Getting a PCR done today. Let's see how long this takes to get results.

Also any data on what colour 7th dick grows if you get the booster while having pre-symptomatic covid?

Are you and Mrs. DP feeling better?
yes!

I feel basically normal today. was wide awake at 5:15 this morning thinking about all the work I wanted to do lol.

now negotiating with our friends (will be 8-10 total) who we jointly book a large cabin to annually celebrate NYE with. one couple is set to fly in from Ontario. I don't see how we can do anything other than cancel but the Ontarians seem determined to come. I'm close to saying, 'you can come but I'm not going to be hanging out with you'. thoughts?

Go have fun.

I think Preston mentioned this, but do we think Boosts are quick to act? We aren't looking 2-3 weeks down the line for the protection to kick in, are we?

This is for Delta but pretty good after a week, pretty much peaking at 2 weeks. Assume ~70% protection for the first month or so. Not perfect but better than 2 doses.

We all have different risk tolerances. Definitely more risky to do than during times of low transmission but if you don't care much about getting omicrowned then go ahead? Could be worth it depending on how much fun that would be for you.

Anddddd a report out of England with interesting findings

Summary:

- 15-20% less likely to need hospital care with omicron vs delta
- 40-45% less likely to require a hospital stay of one or more night
- if you’ve had covid before, 50-60% less likely
- BUT risk of hospitalization the same for delta & omicron if you’ve had just 2 vax (likely due to reduced VE vs omicron)

We now have pretty fucking good data to conclude that the variant is A BIT intrinsically more mild than Delta (and likely still more severe than Alpha). BUT prior infection/vaccines potentially make it a LOT more mild which is what we want more than a milder variant (because next one could be a lot deadlier). Protect our vulnerable at least until the Pfizer pills are widely available.. Once this waves plows through our population we will likely have just about 100% of the world with some exposure to covid by infection, vaccination, or both. That's when the transition to endemicity begins (which granted, still won't be a pretty picture by any stretch of the imagination).

Yeah I have learned to stay the hell out of discussions about individual risk tolerance. It's been completely melded into a political discussion. Tiresome.

I also kind of feel there's a very different feeling for small gatherings vs larger ones. Like, given the wave out there, totally understandable to not want hockey games or office Christmas parties and all that. But like, some little family gatherings? I don't see an issue there.

Now, when you do start getting up to 8-10 people, especially coming from around, now it starts to get a little more. If everyone coming in was cautious and not doing office parties and stuff, then I probably wouldn't have a problem. But especially if these are people who are not even thinking of cancelling, maybe they're also ones who aren't skipping their office events either, and now the chance of there being something happen just goes up even more.

"With our current mitigation scenario, we end up near 350k by Christmas"

Correct Deb. 352,000.

But you said almost nothing publicly, so way to go.
I gotta have some sympathy for people who are put in an impossible situation. It sucks that she wasn't more vocal and it ruined her career, but there's only so much fact-pushing you can do in an administration that doesn't believe in facts.

And if she and Fauci quit in a huff because Trump is so vile, they're simply replaced by a Scott Atlas and more people die as a result.
