OT: MLB Thread

Lol ya, I meant Sternberg , but either way, I want a rich owner that wants the expos. The rays while competitive for some years, also had Friedman, and got lucky. Even CLE had a 130m+ payroll this year. You need big money to win.

you could pay 100 a ticket for 81 games couldn't you?

MLB isn't as gate-dependent as it was back when the Expos left town. Its TV deal is good enough to keep teams alive. What separates the big spenders from the rest is the size of their local broadcast deals.

How does it work with the Jays? They are owned by Rogers aren't they and their local TV deal is also via Rogers isn't it?

Their TV deal is small cause Rogers awards it to themselves

That said, the same corporation "Rogers" gets all the profits on huge ratings and the ad sales they provide, so it could act just like a big tv deal if they wanted to funnel that profit back into the team.

On a smaller scale isn't that why Bell is so attached to any Expos return rumor... all those channels on TSN to fill up with programming? They just can't afford the whole thing on their own.

Yes that is why Bell is always attached.

And make no mistake Bell COULD afford the whole thing on their own, they just don't want to take on that level of risk (and given their duty to shareholders I don't blame their Board for not wanting to take that level of risk either. They don't want to be 100% in this).

Realistically TSN would prefer to get a cut of the Jays because, like every other "national" media outlet they only care about Southern Ontario. But since Rogers owns the team they know that will never happen so their choice is to get into the ownership group of a Montreal MLB team or try to figure out something else to put on their network while Sportsnet is showing the Jays. Media outlets are getting into franchise ownership primarily so that they have content to fill time with. An MLB team gives them up to 162 three hour blocks of content. That's why the new arena in Quebec has Videotron's name on it and why Videotron is going to be part of the ownership group for the NHL team they will eventually get. It's content for TVA Sports that they can use to compete with RDS.

Outstanding deal by Shapiro getting Edwin`s replacement at 1/2 price for nearly the same production at the right contract .

Bell would likely prefer an NFL team in Toronto, but it seems like a long shot right now. They are clearly fixated on London.

The NFL isn't coming to Canada on any permanent basis. Now that the Bills are staying put in Buffalo Toronto is screwed. Besides which, more Canadians would prefer watching CFL football than a Canadian version of the Cleveland Browns or Jacksonville Jaguars.

Not to mention it would be another Toronto team shoved down our throats.

Toronto brings nothing to the media and TV pie for the NFL , that's why they will never get a team . London England is ahead of them by a mile .
