OT: MLB Thread

Outstanding deal by Shapiro getting Edwin`s replacement at 1/2 price for nearly the same production at the right contract .

Say what? Morales is no where near the player EE is. Morales is a liability on the field, and he's super slow. He's a slightly worse hitter than EE, and EE has put up 8.3 war the last 2 years, Morales, 2.6 WAR.

Either way, if you sign Morales to replace EE, you have a huge downgrade and money saved (which I think is the ultimate Rogers goal).

Morales is nowhere near the hitter EE is, not to mention a downgrade defensively. He is a switch-hitter, which is nice, but he is more a DH than 1B. Maybe he is replacing Bautista, with the plan to sign EE as primary 1B and Morales to spell him? That would work well.

Well thats why Morales got 11/year and EE will get around 20/year. 11/year for a guy who hits around 25-30 home runs and 90 RBIs a year sounds like a good deal to me.

He's projected to be around 1.1-1.3 WAR next year, EE 2.3-2.8 , so he's worth about half. But the Jays want to be considered contenders next year, and they want to make the playoffs, they need to not just bring in value, they need improvements.

The Jays will need to make up that WAR elsewhere. They need a Jansen/Cecil + Cespedes , and they might have a shot next year. But I still think they are majorly screwed long term without the same level of prospects as red sox/yanks.

Or to spend the money on getting two.players an of and 1b

Its way too.early to.assume that the jays off-season plan is complete. Baseball.doesnt work like hockey where it all.happens in the first week and then gms go on vacation til training camp

Yeah, still a lot that can happen, not to mention there's always trade possibilities too.

They arent paying EE 20-25 mi a year , thats why they went for plan B. Just like giving Price 30 mil was never in the cards but spreading it around Estrada , Happ, and Grill made more sense and proved to be a better move .

Shapiro built Cleveland without blowing his brains out and drafted well and made sound moves , he will do the same in TO.

Look at all these moronic moves over the years and now GM`s are trying to unload these mistakes , Shapiro will get it done.

Until they see what is does for salaries.

Besides, you think MC can't attract latino ball players?
I think the dream of Latino ball players is to come to America, not merely move from one third world country to another. And don't forget also about the discrimination within the Latin community. These players won't actually be Mexican. They'll most likely be Dominican or Cuban. They may all look and sound alike to us caucasians but there are deep cultural divisions between them. Also, aside from the seaside tourist resorts, Mexico is a dangerous place to live and work. And being a millionaire ball player in a country that poor makes you a target. Your wife and/or kids run a very real risk of being kidnapped and held for ransom. You'd have to live behind walls and bars and have a security detail assigned to you 24/7. I doubt that many players would choose to live that way

Correct me if I'm wrong but Shapiro wasn't GM when Cleveland brought in the majority of their current roster.

If they let EE walk I have no faith in them!

He was the architect behind that roster , he was the GM from 2001-2010 then moved in the President role but oversaw the team .

He fleeced teams in a few trades . They gave EE a number and told them a time line to accept , they declined and moved to plan B.

MLB has a new CBA without a strike.

NFL hasn't had a work stoppage since 1987.

Bettman continues to grind the players and likely will lock them out again.

What is wrong with this picture

Well, the NFLPA were patsies for a long time.

Anyway, it probably comes down to revenues. As in, the NHL has a lot less. So, it becomes a zero sum game, whereas as the others have lotsa cake to share.

Is the answer you keep buying jersey's and tickets as soon as the lock out's are over with?

I don't think there will be another one though. NBC was not pleased with the last one so a 3rd one in short time would be suicidal for revenue IMO.

I have called the NFLPA a house union but someone said once that is racist ;)

NHLPA caved re a cap and now the owners will nibble away constantly. MLBPA never caved.
