OT: Movies/TV Shows

My personal top 5:

1. Major League

2. Dr. Strangelove

3. Ferris Buellers Day Off

4. The General

5. Abbott And Costello Meet Frankenstein

Honorable mentions: all Wes Anderson, Airplane!, Billy Madison, Big Lebowski, Old School, Borat, Anchorman, and obviously any Python.

some seriously weird shit going on in this thread.

Only saw Get Shorty once in the theater, but I remember it being pretty good. And Tropic Thunder is hilarious. Not sure why they're being shit on, though I'd have to watch Get Shorty again to see if it holds up.

and in a similar point, nobody can touch the Beatles. Or even come close. But the Eagles were a great band, so it seems like a weird take, it would make more sense if it was the Bay City Rollers or some shit. It is true that sales don't equal quality in music, though there's usually a good reason why an album makes the top sales of all time list.

It's almost like different people have different tastes or something.

This is craaazy, but at least we're learning something!

Tough to rank the top comedies of all time but maybe i can start by using the easiest metric - the ones that made me bust my gut the most the first time i watched them.

I think i got 4 easy ones right off the bat for that - Naked Gun, South Park Movie, Team America, Borat.

5th i have to think about. Might be Top Secret but not sure.

If it’s purely off a first watch, I don’t know what could ever compete with Borat for ‘bust my gut’ laughs per minute. Especially if someone went in without having seen any of the character on the Ali G show before.

Add in no particular order Holy Grail, Office Space, Spaceballs, Caddyshack and probably Superbad and then we can all knife fight over the rankings.

*edit* Also Idiocracy.

Ah yes the pythons definitely would complete my top 5.

The other ones are top tier there but i'm not sure i was laughing as uncontrollably as the others.

Maybe my sense of humour is a little busted, but my favourite are the dark ass jokes that we're not really supposed to laugh at. The shit littered all throughout Office Space & Idiocracy. It's all hilarious, but in a very fucked up "shit is very wrong with society, why are we not fixing it" way? Though I guess Team America definitely belongs in that category too.

I don't know if I can make a top 5 comedies list without having some parameters, but Steve Martin's L.A. Story is one of my favourite movies of all time, and it's fucking hilarious. Thinking of Steve, The Jerk, Planes/Trains/Autos and Dirty Rotten Scoundrels are all in consideration.

Dr. Strangelove and Spinal Tap are among my all-timers, and obviously all the Pythons films.

Great call on Spaceballs.

Thinking of audience reaction, it was great watching American Pie in a theatre cause the crowd was laughing so much. I think it was pretty close for Borat, South Park, and Team America.

I'll throw Airplane and Zoolander into the mix too. What's Jim Carrey's funniest, Dumb and Dumber?

If I had to pick 5...

L.A. Story
Dr. Strangelove
Holy Grail
Spinal Tap
The Jerk

Wait, are you guys saying Borat The Movie is tops for bust your gut laughter??

Controversy, here you come because...Borat was a major disappointment. Why?

Ironically, because of the legendary Borat sketches on the tv show! Those were BY FAR way, way, funnier than anything done in the movie. Why?? Because they weren't scripted in any way and everything was completely natural and off the cuff. There was no dumb storyline (of finding Pamela Anderson and kidnapping her). That was the whole genius of Borat, that he was tricking the shit out of people. The majority of the movie was stupid scripted shit. I mean, if your idea of comedy is a scripted naked fight, sure, I guess it was hilarious. But it was way short on actual tricking the shit out of people moments, and much too focused on staged garbage that came off as completely phony. The Borat tv sketches fucking murdered anything that they did in the movie. I mean, first degree, premeditated, gory, bloody fucking murder. They're maybe the most hilarious compilation of anything out there from the dawn of time until today.

I'm not good at lists, it's too hard to remember all the good stuff over the years. But off the top of my head:

Anchorman was hilarious, bust my gut funny.
Napoleon Dynamite fucking killed me through probably 20 times watching it.
Dirty Rotten Scoundrels is a great one.
Superbad is really good.
Old School was pretty damn funny.
Clifford (with Martin Short) is a super underrated box office bomb but hilarious.
Mother with Albert Brooks and Debbie Reynolds is fantastic.
Billy Madison
Tommy Boy
Get Shorty, as mentioned.
Rushmore!
Royal Tenenbaums

Many more that I can think of with more time.

I saw Borat at TIFF premiere when the projector broke half way thru — never laughed so hard. I’m such a big Sacha fan but it’s not a top 5 movie because the plot and story telling are subpar and his stuff works way better in short sketches

My fave comedies if you ask right now (next week you might get a different answer)

No specific order

There’s Something About Mary
Groundhog Day
Fargo
The Royal Tenenbaums
The Celebration

Since you're often ganged up on I have to step in and say I agree with this. And Borat for me wasn't even his best character, but that's besides the point.

And I like your comedy list too. Don't agree with all of them but pretty solid overall. Good work sir.

I do think Borat is the best character, Ali G a close second, but yes, way more effective in short 10 minute or less sketches.

Yeah it's close for me but I think I have Ali G first. No one broke more human beings more than him. He is the troll I always aspired to be.

thought about Something About Mary, but forgot to list it. If memory serves it got a lot of laughs in the theatre too, not sure if it still holds up though. And i LOVE Royal Tanenbaums, good call.

Anchorman and Old School were definitely funny enough to be in this discussion.
