OT: Movies/TV Shows

Agreed.

….but with how goddamn likeable Kline can be, I’m wrestling with the possibility he could have maybe out Hanks’d Hanks in many of those roles.

some only work with Hanks….’Private Ryan’ ‘Big’ ‘Gump’…..but there is prob be a big chunk of Hanks hits, Kline might have been better in.
Interesting exercise.

Which Hanks movie could have been made better with Kevin Kline.

Off the top of my head, the ladykillers, of which i found Hanks performance, odd, very odd, but that movie was mostly panned, so i wonder if i can find one that's well regarded.

I always thought Hanks was just fine in Road to Perdition, and wonder if Kline could have pulled off a mobster better, my other choice would be Charlie Wilson's War where again i found Hanks, odd.

I still don't get why people like Tombstone. I mean yeah val is great but otherwise what a mess.
Russell had a thankless task to try & direct it when there basically wasn't anyone else there to do it (at least that's my understanding). Think he did a credible job under the circumstances.

I did a rewatch about a month ago, and man did it not hold up.

I think the main reason people like it is it came out the same time roughly as Wyatt Earp which was an unmitigated disaster, so Tombstone looks good by comparison? It's also arguably the most mainstream Western somehow so i assume it's propped up by those who dont actually like Westerns.

I loved Road to Perdition, and Hanks in it….but I’d pay to watch Kline’s attempt at it too.

your others are great candidates.

Nothing wrong with any of these Hanks performances, but I think Kline kills in any of them…

Cast Away
Green Mile
Captain Phillips
Catch Me if You Can (although him & Leo had a special contrasting chemistry)
Captain Philips
Davinci flicks?
Philadelphia (maybe?…tougher call)

Apollo 13 had to be Hanks tho.

DaVinci is a great shout, Hanks is awkward in that too and i never thought of him once when i read thr books.

Huge no on Catch me if You can, the Hanks/Leo dynamic was the movie.

The others, Hanks was great, but sure, Kline could have maybe pulled it off, but i waver on Castaway. Tom Hanks might be one of the few universably likelable people to do that role.

I think maybe it came out at a time when it was sort of a dead period for westerns? that maybe it just caught our generation that didn't have many decent current westerns? i dunno.

And while val was great, Kurt also looked awesome in the role, and that goes a long way. Hell it has Sam Elliott Powers Boothe Charleton Heston and the great Jason Priestley in it so yeah maybe i get why it hooked people even though it was pretty bad.

Kurt Russell looks like he should be Wyatt Earp....and again, the direct competition was Kevin Costner in a decidedly worse movie.

Im racking my brain, has Kevin Kline ever had the opportunity to play a baddie? Or is he always the love struck sorta loser who ends up stealing the girl back from i dunno, BIll Pullman?

Like I know I've watched Wyatt Earp. Probably a number of times. But damned if i can remember any of it.

12 Angry Men (to my knowledge).

something I’ve always gotten a kick out of…..I saw the remake of ‘12 Angry Men’ before I knew of the original…..which starred Tony Danza, 🤣.

I love how preposterous that sounds on paper.

….but William Friedkin directed it, and it otherwise had a killer cast….it isn’t the original which is perfection, but it’s still really damn good.

Jack Lemmon, George C Scott, Gandolfini, Edward James Almos, Ossie Davis, Courtney B. Vance…..well worth the watch.

thats right up there with Glen Gary as a script made for character actors to strut their stuff.

My god i thought i was the only person who not only seen this but loved it. Scott and Lemmon Steal this made for tv version

Also, shame on you for omitting Hume Cronyn, Mylkelti Williamson and Armin Mueller Stahl.
