OT: Movies/TV Shows

I honestly don't get the notion that Hollywood is somehow struggling to produce new ideas, or failing to embrace niche ideas, or even that there haven't been many excellent recent re-boots of older properties. I see big budget new ideas and imaginitevly reworked old ideas all over the place.

Also, you'll be shocked to know how many of your childhood faves were just reworkings of old ideas.

I’d say the reality is somewhere in the middle, cause we do get an astronomical amount of remakes now…..but you’re right that part of the enjoyment of films as a kid, is not being able to recognize all the inspirations the directors borrowed from.

We can’t watch Force Awakens, or Joker, or all sorts of modern films without recognizing the directors, films, scenes that inspired them.

….but there’s still all kinds of original brilliant shit coming out that continues to surprise/inspire….more than I could ever keep up with.

Ironically I was watching ‘Skeleton Crew’ the other night and thinking how great a modern version of those Goonies type flicks from the 80’s it was, for a new young audience.

The American movie business is just that. A business. It's not art, it's commerce. The days of Jack Warner and Louis B. Mayer are over. It's just bean counters in suits and movie studios are just a small part of media conglomerates. They don't take risks. They go with sure things only.

Art is about taking chances. That's why there's nothing playing at your local multiplex that is of any interest to you unless you're a fan of formulaic comic book movies. It's a no risk industry now.

I doubt they'd have recognized anything from the 1932 version other than the name. Two completely different movies.

That’s true…

The original is about an immigrant gangster named Tony who violently rises through the city’s crime world. His rise to power then dovetails with his relentless pursuit of his boss's mistress while his own sister pursues his best hitman. Ending in a bloody shootout massacre.

Which shares no resemblance to the Scarface we all know and love.

Yeah all the remakes & IP branding is primarily about minimizing their downside. That’s 100% the case.

Fixed for you. I imagine this might be some of the cause of the anti-DePalma version.

it's such a weird sentiment that there isn't anything challenging and non-formulaic in the theatres to watch right now.

even now in january, in the absolute doldrums of the movie calendar, you have movies like The Brutalist, The Last Showgirl, The Room Next Door, Anora, and even some of the bigger budget movies out right now are decidedly anti-formulaic like Nosferatu and A Complete Unknown.

And again, this is the absolute dog days of the movie calendar.

Anyone convincing themselves that there's nothing interesting or new to watch is just old and lazy.
