OT: NFL thread

Maybe you think that with a big enough sample every players will have the same percentage of good and bad games. I don't think it's the case at all.

Here is the thing. In every other sport we see that is the case. So why would we believe football is different.

Carson Palmer could play 1000 games and the results wouldn't change. He's a shitty quarterback who doesn't win games that matter except by blind luck. And it's the same in other sports too. Look at Luongo. He recently played his 900th career game and in all that time he's choked in big games so consistently you could set your watch to him. The only time he ever won anything was at the 2010 Olympics and even then he did everything in his power to blow it. Last week Palmer did everything in his power to blow it but got lucky. But luck only gets you so far. In the pantheon of champions there are two kinds of players: clutch and very very lucky. And the only way to tell the difference is to put away the stat sheets and actually watch them play. Palmer is a fraud. You don't need stats to know that. You just need eyes.

Most people in life don't get the benefit of sample size, you don't get 10 chances of nailing that important neeting or interview, some players only get one game to do their impression.

This was Palmer's big chance, he finally was healthy with a strong team with a real chance at winning it all. He was coming up a MVP candidate season with the best group of receivers in the league. He delivered a shaky performance against GB that proved enough to win so he got a second chance to deliver a strong performance to send his team to the SB and he failed, he chocked badly. Maybe he'll get another chance to redeem himself and if he does then everything will be forgiven but if not he will remain a chocker.

That is an excellent point.

I wonder where Wehave ranks Troy Aikman.

I will say this much, Wehave's attitude has changed from the time on the old Gazette forum where he lauded Doug Flutie, the ultimate fraud.

I lauded him for what he was able to accomplish. His detractors wrote him off simply because of his size. There are people who said that Drew Brees would never amount to anything because he wasn't tall enough.

Flutie didn't have the advantages of a Carson Palmer but he accomplished more.

As for Aikman he was a good quarterback for a period of time.

Have we? We can hardly agree on what measure to use to evaluate performance under pressure so I find that hard to believe.

Is it that guy that won the SB in his first 3 playoffs appearance and was the MVP in 2 of them?

he was being sarcastic, although one could argue if Wilson doesn't choke last year, Brady's legacy as a winner in the big game would have taken a hit

Still, he is a top 5 all time, probably top 3 and he gets to bang this so all is good

Don't worry, Brady will lobby the league to change the rule such that the RDE going up against Vollmer cannot hit him next year. Brady rule 2.0

Bradshaw, Montana, Aikman, Eli Manning are the only QBs with a perfect Superbowl record (multiple appearances).

Aikman was very good....overshadowed by Emmitt and Irvin, but just as important, if not more.

Small sample size (< 5 games each) so very hard to make a rational judgment.
