OT: Politics & News... Have at it.

Wall Street approves

The following level headed electoral analysis is from David Rosenberg, former Chief Economist for Merrill Lynch North America, now Chief Strategist at Gluskin Sheff.

This is just an excerpt. The whole article is worth a read

And the outlook for the currency has actually turned more positive. Why?

Because of all three parties, weighing in all the tax effects and spending initiatives, and accounting for all the fiscal multipliers, the Liberal plan looks to add the most to real GDP growth for the next four years by our analysis (mostly via the proposed infrastructure package).

The Conservative stimulus provided a comparably smaller boost (income splitting, expanded child care benefits, payroll and business tax relief), while the NDP’s proposals were dead last in our analysis, only adding marginally to growth on an average annual basis.

If Canadians voted with the economy in mind, you can see why the results were what they were.

I think Sanders could have had a shot if he was smarter about managing his socialist ideology. Clinton isn't a really strong candidate, she could be taken over but Sanders is painting himself as way too risky of a proposition for the Democrats.

Not every country in the world has a single payer healthcare model.

Also the Great US doesn't to hear that it should model itself against Norway and Denmark, that's a sure way to lose voters. Talk about ideas but don't talk about modeling yourself to other countries. The US ego is too big to handle that.

I doubt he ever had a chance. I doubt most here want a 74 year old Jewish socialist from Brooklyn as their Pres., regardless of how he labels his ideas.

But man, can you imagine one of Sanders-Trump-Carson sitting across the table from Putin or Merckel......yikes !!!

Isn't Sanders' role to provide the same effect to the Dems that NDP provides to Liberals - social compass?

Ben Carson is probably the smartest person running for Pres., from either party, but his lack of experience in being able to at least articulate his ideas as a politician dooms his candidacy. I think he wound have a chance if he had some experience in being able to articulate his ideas in 30 second sound-bites, as opposed to having to explain himself the next day after every controversial thing that people think he said.

Fair enough but despite all that he's been generating quite a buzz from almost nothing. Very few were giving Obama much of a chance back then as well.

They gave the conservatives a minority in 2006
they gave them a minority again in 2008
They gave them the majority in 2011

Really, this is the narrative? The conservative majority in 2011 was punishing the liberals for scandals that happened 3 leaders and 4 governments earlier?

No I don't think so.

It was the liberals putting up shitty candidates, and shitty plans.

Yesterday was the electorate punishing a party who had been in power (And had unchecked power since 2011, with a majority) and had their own scandals that needed to be punished.

With a liberal majority today, the same will likely happen again, whether its 4 years or 8 years from now. With unchecked power the liberals will have their own scandals, its just a matter of time, and we'll put the conservatives in again, and then they will have scandals, and then we will put in the liberals again... and the cycle will continue.

The turning point here is the 80s... not WWII.

10 years is always the kiss of death for a leader. As I mentioned yesterday Harper, Chretien and Campbell in BC all started to get on the nerves of the people even though they were running a good ship.

It was Chretien who really turned this country around when he went into overdrive on fiscal restraint and turned deficits into surpluses. Unfortunately the gun registry fiasco and Paul Martin attempting a coup caused things to unravel for the Libs.

These things do go in cycles. Harper had a good run but the country never seemed to really like him. Let's see who wants his job as leader of the Conservs because if it is Jason Kenney then I think they will be in trouble for awhile. What is Jean Charest doing these days?

Carson is book smart, yet incredibly ignorant. Compared the US to Nazi Germany, stated Obamacare was worse than 9/11 and thinks homosexuals could 'cure' themselves.

“Very much like Nazi Germany - and I know you’re not supposed to talk about Nazi Germany but I don’t care about political correctness - you had a government using its tools to intimidate a population,” Carson answered. “We now live in a society where people are afraid to say what they actually believe.”

Carson blamed this on the “PC police,” politicians and the media. Carson claimed “a horrible schism” is being created that is threatening to “destroy our nation if we don’t fix it.”

i meant no competition for jobs. as for corporate profits, tech companies (Microsoft, Apple, Google) have 2.1 Trillion stashed overseas to avoid taxes.

http://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2015-03-04/u-s-companies-are-stashing-2-1-trillion-overseas-to-avoid-taxes

Corporations in general have stockpiled billions under Obama's presidency afraid to reinvest in workers and technology but not afraid in giving the executive board super bonuses for doing such a good job. Bernie Sanders has come to notice this.

Unless of course the liberals push people away with scandal again

Call me a cynic... but i think the scandal part of this cycle is inevitable for any party who is in power too long

Nothing cynical about that at all... basically leaders start to go wonky after 10 years of power and lose touch with what is going on in their own party underneath their rule.

the western world does iirc.

You are right re Denmark, you have to tell Americans they are the best, the rest of the world is wrong etc if you want to be elected

You're confusing universal health care with single payer health care.

France, Germany, Switzerland, the low Countries for example are following variation of the Bismarck model where health care is covered by insurance companies (which can include and be subsidized by the government) and often the individual will also have to assume a small portion of the cost, similar to a deductible.

Ben Carson is the living proof that you can be a neurosurgeon and be dumb as a box of rocks.

Agree totally. I know he is a brain surgeon but some of the things he says are mind boggling... scary too.

Wasn't he the guy who also stated people who went into prison straight but came out gay proves they have a choice in their homosexuality?
