OT: The M-Fing Food Thread

My father gave me a couple of pieces of BBQed liver as a kid, maybe 5 years old. I threw up pretty violently within minutes, and never tried it again. I still remember the taste of that thing I tried once almost 40 years ago as a child.

My mom butchered liver as well; most homecooks do. They overcook it. Having said that, I'm in no hurry to try it again.

Same thing with raw sea urchin -- I know it's' supposed to be great but the first few times I had it (in an average sushi joint), it was disgusting, so now I still get the chef to sub it out, even at a high priced sushi spot.

I have yet to find edible uni in Toronto. Which is a shame because it really is fucking fantastic when fresh.

cow tongue is great on a pretzel bun with a little mustard/pickles

I will take your word for it. Perhaps I will try it the next time I'm in Japan (and add it to a small list of food curiosities that ended up wrapped in a napkin)

Probably not for everyone. There's a certain funkiness in uni that I've had in Toronto that was not present at all in Japan. Always find there's a very off-putting almost rotten taste, and I've had it at multiple higher end places here. But it does taste pretty ocean-y even in Japan. I personally fucking love it but I get that It's not for everyone.

That pic is from a spot in Toronto called People's Eatery (now closed). There are probably good options in LA.

There are. They make it better than that looks like it is. It’s usually Mediterranean style. I was intrigued by the burger style though.

The one I used to get tasted a lot like smoked meat or similar type of deli meat.

I'm late to this but, no I'm not diluting my lobster with anything. I've had one before but found myself wishing I just had the lobster by itself.

well yeah, that's because most restaurants will downplay the lobster ratio for profit reasons. You gotta make it at home or go somewhere where they make the lobster the star (it will cost you though)

Yeah, that’s what I imagined that would taste like. It’s totally different here at the Mediterranean spots. They marinate it, it’s super fresh and soft. Closest thing I can compare it to is a really nicely cooked short rib, where it sort of disassembles as you put your fork into it. Fantastique.

Yeah mine was loaded with lobster. Wasn't cheap. Still prefer having my lobster by itself. That's a whole different ball game compared to tuna for me.
