OT: The News Thread

is that your legal opinion?
lol

Well non lawyers give legal opinions here all the time so I figured a non doctor could give a medical opinion too

However, his legal issues go way back before he was at UF even so this isn't an NFL concussion issue.

Interesting legal point, under Mass law, if you die while appealing, the conviction is vacated so technically he is not guilty of the murder for which he was in prison. That could require the Patriots to pay his estate the money they owe him. Granted the dead guy's family wants to get at the money too from a wrongful death claim. While I feel badly for them, they would be taking money from a young girl whose dad "Hernandez" is now dead. The money won't bring their son back and it would just be a cash grab for them, whereas she likely could get a lot of use out of the money.

Her "dad" if alive, would have spent life in prison.

Lets be honest here, she was growing up without her dad even before he killed himself.

NFL contracts aren't guaranteed, so no matter what Hernandez's ultimate legal status, they wouldn't owe him a penny of his salary for the four remaining years of his contract that were cancelled when the Patriots released him after his initial arrest.

I suppose the only thing the Patriots could potentially be on the hook for was a 2012 $3.25M signing bonus that was due to be paid in 2014, but that they withheld it on the grounds of his "conduct detrimental to professional football". But that brings up another question. Hernandez was also convicted of a bunch of weapons-related charges. So, was he appealing those too? If he wasn't, then he's still a convicted criminal, and the Patriots would still have grounds to withhold his signing bonus even without the murder conviction.

Say goodbye to another formerly "secular" nation.

Then again the Turkish military tends to step in when the allahu akbars get too crazy.

Fun times.

Except this is more about a dictator fixing the vote and expanding his powers than about religion.

You know, like your buddy Vlad.

The military is neutered after the coup last year.

After the purge, they probably won't be relevant in Turkey for the next decade. The Turkish military doesn't have enough experience left in the ranks now to order toilet paper.

A little fantastic for my tastes.

I'll bet the root of this is kleptocratic rent seeking. It usually is in corrupt basket cases. They are following the KGB model.

It is only the guaranteed money and yeah he was appealing them too

Wouldn't any money won for Hernandez just go to lawyers and victim's families anyways? He had to be in horrendous debt before this second trial came up. How was Baez being paid? Rumour is Baez got paid by Casey Anthony in blowjobs, but who knows if that is true.
