OT: The Toronto Blue Jays

think really hard of the most vanilla SP acquisition possible.

That will be AA's guy.

In a way i'm understanding to not want to overpay for Price/Samardzija. I get it, especially Price who is virtually a lock to bolt after 2013. I'm not too keen on moving Sanchez/Stroman for a guy for 2 years, and Samardzija might more be appear to be good than actually be good, in terms of dealing top prospects.

The problem is with the moves made last year being for a 3 year window, ( not this bullshit 5 year talk we've heard over the past 2 days) any non moves made this year will de-value the moves made last year. They shoved all in last year, and need to keep the same sort of mentality or it really makes no sense. That said, there don't appear to be that many of those " over the top" players out there that make sense. It's tough.

For lack of a better metaphor.

The Jays roofied and raped the girl last off season. This offseason they need to snap her neck and bury her in the woods, no matter how unpleasant.

I don't know. The Jays had a bad year last year, but just through health alone they should be better this year. Between Morrow, Happ, Drabek, and Hutchenson they didn't even get 150 innings last year. Between Morrow, Drabek and Hutch they got 50. And those are decent enough arms. Stroman looks like he could be ready to jump up too.

IMO if you believed in the core you put together last year, no reason to not believe in them now. They really don't have to do anything insane to be a competitive team. And making a panic move just because of the disappointing year only exasperates the problem. The organization made the decision that Sanchez and Stroman were the guys they believed in and wanted to keep. You can't turn around on that now out of pure desperation.

IMO this 5 year talk isn't about trying to save his ass and manage expectations. Its a sign that he still believes in what they have built here.

As we have seen making huge offseason splashes isn't always the easy path to winning.

There are 2 reliable arms in the rotation.

To count on anything from Morrow, Happ, or Drabek is foolish

To count out Morrow is foolish IMO.

Happ/Drabek aren't being counted on for anything. But they along with Hutch, and maybe Stroman and Sanchez are options that flat out weren't there last year (aside from Happ). And those are the #4-7 or 8 guys in the rotation right now.

They'll add another starter, because they need to. But they don't need to make the front page or do anything crazy. Just make a couple of smart, solid additions.

A guy like Price would be great, but this idea that they need to do something huge just because last year was disappointment isn't the right way to run a franchise IMO.

They need to make sure the SP they add is at least 1-2 steps better from that group.

I'm not counting out Morrow's skill, but the guy is never healthy. To expect anything from him would be silly

No one is saying they should stand pat. But they don't need to make a big splash just because they already did last year and then had a bad season. They need to stick to the plan, and add parts that make sense.

Thats what the 5 year thing is about. They didn't go all in and now they have no choice but to double down or else. They are trying to build something sustainable here.

Well the part that makes sense is a number 1-2 SP.

And what they did do last year does affect this year.

They gave up a good chunk of the farm, winning is still mandatory, and what they aquired ( Reyes, Beuhrle, Dickey) has a shelf life.

You can't talk about the acquisition cost of trades not making sense AND be a gay about 5 year deals in free agency.

It means it's all but certain you will not land a player that matters.
