OT: The Toronto Blue Jays

i also disagree with semien's take that it happened too late. the fate of the season was in their hands and they choked in the two easy twins series, and then coughed up 2 of 3 against a team they were fighting for a spot against.

they buried themselves.

Nah, you can't blame them for every loss down the stretch. The team was 22-9 from Sept1 onwards, and 25-10 if you count the couple games before. Yeah, you can nitpick games in that stretch, but you can't expect more than that down the line.

It was really the mid-August swoon that did them in. The tough west coast swing, then going 0-2 vs the Nats and dropping 2/3 to Detroit, just threw them too far out of the running by that point that you couldn't make it up. I know mentally that's about when I crossed them out, "can't even beat Detroit ugh" sort of feeling. They were down to a 5% chance of making the playoffs at that point, and it was really only their miracle run and the Yankees collapse that even got them to play a meaningful game 162.

Yep, they played better down the stretch than at any other point in the year. The losses in August and April were just as important in the end. If anything, they showed a really encouraging an unexpected resilience after struggling in late August. Would have been easy to pack it in over a month ago. It speaks to the character of the team and (sorry, fellas) some good work by the manager and coaching staff.

Poetic justice that the former Expos, the team that the Jays voted to have contracted, end up being the ones to put the final nail in Toronto's coffin.

Great season to build upon , playing in 3 venues and all the distractions with families etc....

I hated the Blue Jays long before they voted to contract the Expos. Probably started in 1977 when they decided to be a team from Toronto. I hate Toronto FC even though I've never watched 5 minutes of any MLS game ever.
