OT: The Toronto Blue Jays

I have standards for my team (something I encourage Leafs fans to have instead of just blindly applauding your team simply for wearing the uniform right side out like parents of a toddler who just took his first dump) and when they don't meet those standards they don't capture my attention, only my scorn. I don't need to actually watch the Habs play the Devils in Newark to know that I'm going to be bored silly so I simply don't watch. I know what no risk, no reward hockey looks like. I don't need to see any more of it than is necessary.
I have no standards. I get excited over first place, but that's just because I'm easy to please.

Most Leafs fans are. Unfortunately, most Habs fans under 40 are similarly easy to impress which is why the Habs are mired 30 years deep into the same spiral of futility that the Leafs have been in since 1968.

I actually hate Toronto because one time this kid cussed at me in preschool.

So, secretly I revel in each loss. Unless we play Carolina, in which case I don't even watch because those two points mean less.

And then they cry about how they aren't connecting with young fans anymore. Well when your playoff games don't end until 2am nobody that young is watching. Afternoon playoff games rule (especially when you work in a near empty office due to Covid and have the ability to video stream, lol)

I remember racing home from school 43 years ago this week to catch the Yankees-Red Sox playoff game at Fenway. I was 12 and it was a school night so had the game only started at 8pm I'd have never seen more than the first couple of innings before being sent to bed.

Yeah, I agree there. You have to know that these wildcard playoff games are going to run very long, so even a 7pm start would end more like 11-11:30 EDT. I mean, I understand not wanting to start too early - the Dodgers game in that case would start at 4pm local time. But yeah, it sucks for east coast people who can't stay up until all hours of night.

Weird that you believe that the futility is due to lack of pressure (fans being easy to impress) and not because of the stupid narratives and pressure (zomg trade Nylander! They're 24 and haven't won a cup yet!!! The best stretch of regular season success in the last 60 years doesn't matter!!!!).

It's way easier to be an elite athlete in a market that gives zero fucks and just let's you live your life. Our respective medias are as ridiculous as they are exhausting.

Far harder environment to succeed in than more or less anywhere else.

well this adds some helpful context

Toronto has gotten better while Montreal has declined.

I don't know if Montreal has declined (haven't been in a few years now) but Toronto is in the middle of a pretty massive ~20 yr transformation. When transit and regional rail are sorted (underway with a functioning plan...fucking finally) it's going to be legitimately world class. Montreal doesn't need to have declined for Toronto to have become the significantly better city.
