IKF turns 29 next week. He is past his defensive peak. The Jays are paying a premium to play IKF down the defensive spectrum (3B, corner OF) where much of his defensive value is wasted. Meanwhile, he has negative offensive value but is going to be in the lineup everyday because of salary.yes, because a 28 year old with elite defense and a 35 year old journeyman are the same thing
and at what cost?as I have said repeatedly, he is overpaid. But he is much better defensively than those guys.
I would expect the guy who averages under 1 WAR per 650 PA to be just that. Spending any money for a 1 WAR player is very dumb as you should be able to pull them out of your system or ST invites for league minimum. This is the baseball equivalent of spending 3 milly on the 4th liner. It never returns value, ever.1.6 and 1.5 wins the two years before last. And again, one win is generally considered to be worth around $7-8 million dollars.
He was a painfully stupid idea before you factor in that it was the biggest overpay accross MLB for the entire offseason. If IKF is anything but an everyday shortstop where the position adjustments in WAR maximizes his value, he will struggle to hit 1 WAR this season in full time duty. If he's anything but a fulltime 3B who spot starts at SS, he'll struggle to hit .5 WAR, again because of the positional adjustments.
If they do super-util him, he'll probably end up replacement level.
But you are against Adam Duval or Robbie Grossman as an OF4 because you like the idea of IKF or Biggio out there.I've always liked JD Davis, I'm not against that idea. Split time with IKF who can also super-util. Just not sure on roster spots as I think Clement may be out of options and could already be pushing Espinal to the minors.
If you sign Davis I'm willing to punt Clement if need be.I've always liked JD Davis, I'm not against that idea. Split time with IKF who can also super-util. Just not sure on roster spots as I think Clement may be out of options and could already be pushing Espinal to the minors.
Yeah, IKF at 7.5M, nothing to worry about, minor league deal for a proven OF4....doesnt excite you, lets trot out garbage.
Doesn't look too bad. If they don't bring in JD, you have one spot for Clement/Espinal or a 4th OF. I do kind of like Clement there. If you sign Davis I'm willing to punt Clement if need be.

This isn't perfect, and i still hate the idea of IKF/Biggio as an OF4. IKF is used to come in after Vogelbach PH for someone
It only looks okay if you add Davis...and even then it's not super flexible.Doesn't look too bad. If they don't bring in JD, you have one spot for Clement/Espinal or a 4th OF. I do kind of like Clement there.
also the Giants really screwed over JD Davis

And he'll be lucky to get 3MWeird article. This is how it has always worked, for all arbitration deals. Pretty sure Davis would have realized he was on a non-guaranteed contract. Now he’s a FA, free to sign anywhere.
