OT: The Toronto Blue Jays

Apparently the ask is $585 x13years ( as per David Ortiz). Is Guerrero worth that kind of money? No but to the Jays he should be, he's the home grown superstar. They prefer to throw that kind of money around at other players and not their own. Players who only use them as a negotiating leverage.

The worst part of it all, is even letting it to get to this point. Guerrero has been in the organization since he was 16yearold. The last seven of those being in the big leagues; they've had years to extend him past his arbitration years and even free-agency. But this idiots running the team don't believe in this. They think taking players to arbitration is the most cost effective way to save money.

This is a big cloud over the the team and wouldn't surprise me to start hearing heavy trade rumors when they start out of the gate poorly.

Fuck Shatkins.

If he's asking for $585M now, that means he was asking for a ridiculous amount in the past too. And yes, that would absolutely explain why no deal got done. Only on this board could somebody post a factoid so ludicrous, then say it's the Jays fault.

i bet that great players become cheaper going forward.

can't wait to outsmart the market again!
you're smarter than this. If you think he's worth $585 million, that's cool. Go ahead and post that. But I guess nobody is allowed to disagree because it's so obviously fair market value for a first baseman, right?

Its like Axl is unaware how completely fucked for eons this team is once Vlad and Bo walk

The core of the team is some combination of old, mid and shit

The farm is bottom 5 in baseball

We struggle to attract FA with Bo and Vlad as tempting reasons, i can only imagine the Corey Koskie's we need to overpay in the aftermath of them bolting.

We are outside 9 months of being in worse overall shape than the White Sox

we can get two whole Gimenezes for that money! and a fungible reliever on top of that!
okay, so the problem is that you have no idea how to do math. I guess there is one easy solution to that:

Just plain bad luck that we get all the guys who want bad deals while other teams get the guys kn good deals.

Also annoying that the teams with all the overpaid guys are way better than us.

Believe me, I'm fully aware of the situation. Though the farm system is not as bad as you say.

I'm totally fine with overpaying Vlad and trying to find a reasonable amount for Bo. And maybe I'm being unrealistic about the cost of star players going forward. That seems like crazy money to me though. For Ohtani, yes.

Oh I forgot we are not allowed to debate or discuss any of these points without Zeke's permission, sorry.

This organization is 6 months away from a 5-7 year rebuild.

It is as bad as i say, there is zero top end star talent in the farm, but a wide variety of safe major leaguer, which is an inditement on how shit the draft/development philosophy has been for years under these guys

It will not be 5 - 7 year rebuild. The playoffs are easy to make. Blind squirrel, and all.

But in all Seriousness, the "rebuild" will be pretty quick. They have tonnes of money coming of their cap in a year or 2. Something like $88m committed in 2026 and $55 mil committed for 2027.

You can buy a lot of overpriced FAs for that.

But in reality, there will be some cheap salary dump acquisitions.

Here is what Ortiz said, it’s what he believes Vladdy deserves, not what he asked for:

David Ortiz on Vladdy Jr.'s extension:
"He deserves a 13-year, $585 million contract. Vladdy Jr. is an elite offensive player, he's young and with Gold Glove-caliber defense", per @z101digital.

I’ve been perplexed for years that we didn’t lock him up when we could have gotten him for under 400M and was dreading the day we’d lose him. Did they just not believe in him after coming into camp out of shape and then having the 2022 & 2023 seasons he did? Did it have something to do with him being signed originally by AA? He should’ve been locked up though. The only doubt I have is whether he can keep up what he did last year & 21 rather than 22 & 23. I’m hoping for a long-shot scenario where he still re-signs at this point. They really should try to convince him to open up talks again and keep them completely secure from being leaked if he’s concerned it will be a distraction.
