OT: The Toronto Blue Jays

Here is what Ortiz said, it’s what he believes Vladdy deserves, not what he asked for:

David Ortiz on Vladdy Jr.'s extension:
"He deserves a 13-year, $585 million contract. Vladdy Jr. is an elite offensive player, he's young and with Gold Glove-caliber defense", per @z101digital.

ah

It is as bad as i say, there is zero top end star talent in the farm, but a wide variety of safe major leaguer, which is an inditement on how shit the draft/development philosophy has been for years under these guys
Serious question: you don't like Nimmala? I think he was in the 80s for top 100.

Also have we given up on Manoah and Teiderman? I know injuries and pitchers go together and all. Truthfully Teiderman is probably a bullpen arm at this point.

Orelvis Martínez is a big question mark, but that bat might be real.

Tbh, I can understand axl’s point though too since we don’t know what Vladdy asked for. None of us know all the details. And all this complaining (point understood) is honestly just pointless and toxic.

If Ortiz was just speculating, that would make a lot more sense. It will definitely be an interesting offseason. I would have said, yesterday, that Kyle Tucker will get $450 and Vladdy $400. Maybe they both get a lot more, who knows.

Regardless of what side you're on, Vladdy turned down the 3rd biggest contract in MLB history.

10 Biggest Contracts in MLB History

1. Juan Soto - 15/$765
2. Shohei Ohtani - 10/$700
3. Aaron Judge - 9/$360
4. Bryce Harper - 13/$330
5a. Corey Seager - 10/$325
5b. Yoshinobu Yamamoto - 12/$325
7. Gerrit Cole - 9/$324
8a. Manny Machado - 10/$300
8b. Trea Turner - 11/$300
10. Xander Bogaerts - 11/$280

no it isn't. Nimmala absolutely has star upside, as does Tiedemann if he can ever stay healthy. Orelvis and Yesavage have pretty good upside comparable to the 3-4 guys in a lot of orgs.

On Friday evening, MLB Pipeline released their top 100 preseason list, featuring two Blue Jay prospects ranked back-to-back. Their 2023 first-round pick Arjun Nimmala ranks 87th overall while their 2024 first-round pick Trey Yesavage ranks 88th overall.

It’s worth noting that Baseball America’s Geoff Pontes is a little bit higher on the Jays’ farm system than most, ranking five prospects in his Top 100.

Money. He seems to have a shelf life at his stops, as his buy-all-the-expensive-FAs-and-trade-all-the-prospects approach does get old quick.

But he does do quick turn arounds.

He's 68 yrs old and currently signed through 2027, and his team won 95 games last year.

And the system's strength is depth, not top talent.
Only one of those is bottom 5 though. Jonas wrong again. ;)

It was a rough year, but if I'm right it's not a bottom 10 org. By no means is it amazing, though.

Baseball America's writeup:

23. Toronto Blue Jays

Top Prospect: Ricky Tiedemann, LHP

The Blue Jays had about as rough a 2024 as one could have from an injury perspective. Ricky Tiedemann, Landen Maroudis and Brandon Barriera all had elbow surgery, and Orelvis Martinez was suspended for PEDs. The team has a group of talented but unheralded players in its Top 10 in Arjun Nimmala, Josh Kasevich and Alan Roden.

Gee don’tcha think dangling 1.4bn between ohtani and Soto (which tweedle dumb dumbs were very careful to let us all know they did) mighta influenced vladdy’s ask?
It's a fair point, probably shoulda skipped the Soto experience. He's a damn good player, but it's still too much and was never going to come here.

wait a sec what if they knew they never actually had a chance at Soto or Shohei?

Ohtani reset the market. Sotos contract looks ridiculous too if you compare it to Judge/Harper.

This is going to happen in the NHL too.

$40 mill for Vlad is right. It’s not top 5 player money. He is only 25 and has 2 MVP caliber seasons.

Shatkins are dumb.

It’s such a piss off, not because they won’t pay $585 if that’s the ask, which I believe it’s not because he wants to stay here, it’s probably like $450 but regardless, these MORONS could’ve had him like 3 years ago on a 10/11/12 year deal at around $300 and refused to even sniff around a reasonable offer because of their shared risk adverse BS mantra. THEN they go and offer two other guys the entire Bank of Canada and now they’re surprised Vlad wants more too? Fick off. Completely mismanaged any way you look at it.

Also, their egos are so massive, I bet they don’t want to lock up Vladdy unless they themselves have extensions, so they can get all the glory and not just be replaced and Jays win down the road with actual management.
