OT: World Politics

Nah, I'm not that deep with it. The other thing imo is how easy it is to doctor audio.

The opinions I've read from munitions experts suggest that the best way to differentiate from one type of bomb/missile to the next is from the blast damage information. For example, the type of air strike munition Israel uses most (JDAM retrofitted 500lb bomb) typically leaves a blast crate of 1M or more in depth. The blast crater in question is apparently 30cm at most.

For comparison, this is a blast crater from a 122mm rocket like what's fired out of a MLRS and a bit more in line with what you'll see Hamas, IJ, Daesh, Hezbollah etc using. This crater was measured at 49cm in depth.

That looks like a normal patch of road in and around any major highway in Montreal...

I don’t doubt that there is tons of poverty in Gaza, but you just don’t see a lot of this side of it.

Had no idea it had that level of upscale spots…poking around it sounds like it’s maybe Rimal? The prosperous district in Gaza city, along the coastline.

Rimal contains the Palestinian Presidential Palace, the Governor's Palace, the Gaza Mall, the Roots Club, the United Nations beach club, the Palestinian Centre for Human Rights, the main al-Shifa Hospital, the Palestinian Legislative Council, and a number of foreign government offices, four hotels, and all of the city's well-known restaurants.

….which made me wonder how does it stay so nice, with all the conflict over the years…a classism based unwritten rule about those areas?

answer: if there was, there isn’t anymore. heh.

….at least it’s not just poors getting bombed.

They also have a 5 star hotel in Gaza City, the Al Mathaf Hotel…

Plenty of nice spots all along the coast tbh….

Now knowing where the wealth is collecting, no surprise it was one of the first places to get flattened.

I would like to see the whole video. I found a longer one on youtube but it's not complete. He states towards the end of the longer one "The time that Jews have no power to defend themselves is done."

It feels like we're standing one second from midnight.......

yeah I wonder who the fat cats are living in upscale Rimal

Maybe hamas just needed to remind everybody how bad the Jews are.

Creature comforts are bad business for terrorist leaders.

Channel 4 made a short doc on this a few years ago, can only find it on their website so far, behind a paywall….

…did track down a free podcast version of it…

I told my wife this morning that we may be witnessing the start of WWIII. But I really, really hope I'm wrong. Never seen anything like this in my life.
I thought this when the second tower fell and that the first wasn’t an accident. I hope this ain’t what’s going to come of this.

Israeli journalist who has followed, spoken to, and written extensively about Hamas….good listen.

Towards the end he talks about his shock at the level of depravity Hamas showed and discussing it with a member of Fatah...who said the big difference now is it’s a generation of brainwashed people who Hamas have convinced them that it’ll bring them redemption….and that like Goebbels they’ve convinced them that Israeli’s aren’t human, making the massacre we saw, possible.

Non-governmental terror/violence groups often participate in large scale drug trafficking (ETA, IRA, some groups in the Balkans.) Even creepier is human trafficking, which would not surprise me re: Hamas.

But this extends to official sovereigns too. Much of the cause of extreme repression and violence from Putinistas and IRG is the fear that their looting and corruption will exposed and turned against them.

Was reading an article last night discussing the economy of the underground tunnels to Egypt and the crazy amount of volume that goes through every day (something like 90% of all building materials)…..and how Hamas is basically just the mob taking an enormous chunk off the top for themselves. (and that’s on top of whatever they’re pilfering via governmental channels)

Think it was that Peace negotiator posted a while back who had been in contact with Hamas leadership that said bolstering their support in the region was significant factor in decided to plan the attack…because as you say, they thought the tides were turning against them, and that an attack might help them solidify support.

The support imo will be short term. The Saudis really want to change the calculus in the region. Long term its probably existential to the royal family's rule. Boxing in Iran is way more important to them than the Palestinian issue, though that obviously gets more traction on the street.
