OT: World Politics

all the truck drivers I know were pissed off by the convoy sullying their image in the eyes of Canadians (and making it harder for them to do their damn jobs) 🤷‍♂️

I also know essential workers who were upset with how quickly society reopened and the reckless disregard with which it did so. particularly in the context of healthcare.

and almost all of the truckers (in Canada, total, not the convoy) were vaccinated too. and to the extent they had problems with being unvaccinated, that was largely from American, not Canadian laws.

I don't understand the argument you're trying to make about class here - happy to entertain it though.

and instead of alluding to blind spots of the professional class types - please share them. I am curious.
maybe the takeaway was that humans naturally surround themselves with folks who have similar/the same views as they do...

I love that the only explanation for labelling the wealthy fake trucker squatters as either liars or idiots must be classism.

I've never met a marxist who didn't deeply believe that the only thing necessary to jam a square peg into a round hole is sufficient force.

In other news...for those who criticized Ukraine's offensive gains as taking too long, being too cautious, etc, I present this with no further editorial:

Ukraine attacked and took significant amounts of territory across 3 axis over the course of the summer and took less losses in total than Russia has in the last 10 days attacking one area with only a couple of farmers fields worth of gains to show for it.

silly ME, trying to let facts ruin a good narrative

The fantasy of the pro democracy right wing conservative "strong man".

The international right wing has been on a stealth mission to dismantle democracy while pitching themselves as the only thing that can protect the people from "insert villain here" for decades now. The bubble always pops eventually. In the end we seem to find out that the only thing they're particularly good at is the dismantling democracy part.

In other words, unlike America, Israel exists to stop the next pogrom. But over the past two weeks, its people have been subjected to an endless stream of images that evoke Jewish history’s worst traumas: parents killed in front of their children, kids cowering in closets, families burned alive, terrified young people hiding in piles of leaves while death squads circle around them. “I’m a child of Holocaust survivors,” one Israeli woman told reporters. “I grew up hearing stories of the camps. I thought those were the worst stories. These stories are worse. And I think that’s the hardest thing for me. I never thought I would live to see something worse than the stories I grew up with.”

i.e. they've been gaslighting us all along, and too many idiots have been more than happy to play along

Kind of amazing that the two main things than hard right governments are supposedly good at are security and managing the economy, despite reams of evidence that they suck shit at both.
