Season Ending State of the Union / Expansion Draft Thread

Yup.

Problem then becomes, who's The Charlatan's replacement? I can't name you a single person who can fit the bill outside of Martin Madden Jr in Anaheim, simply because of the language shit.

I'd really want someone who isn't a "hockey guy" and try to get the next Julien Brisebois.

If they don’t repeat and some key people leave/retire, he might look around. I’m sure he’d be tempted.

Why would Brisebois ever leave TBay for a no win situation? He can attract any talent he wants, and they take hometown discounts.

I feel another Reggie Houle era on the horizon...
There's also the very high status mark to think of, a local boy being the Habs GM? It would tempt brisebois.

Or JB will be spiteful and never let Geoff forget that he was snubbed for Bergevin when they both interviewed for the gig,

The more experience he gets in Tampa Bay, the more interesting an option he becomes.

My thing with Darche is, despite having outside interests and having a good education, he's still more of a "hockey guy" to me.

The problem with ranking people on their competences to be the General Manager is that we don't have quantifiable metrics/data/information on their actual performances.

Yeah, who would want a "hockey guy" to run a hockey team? For every analytics guy who's succeeded actually running a pro sport franchise, there are at least 3 or 4 who have not. Just get the right guy, whether he's a former player or not. The problem is that you won't know if you did until a few years after they've been hired.

No, we don't. For people without a track record, what is said during the job interview (vision, management style, metrics, etc) is paramount.

No way I would have hired Bergevin if I was in charge of the intv process -- 10 mins of him blathering about karactur would have me reaching for the eject button.

You don’t know if that’s what he said at the interview or if he even says that behind closed doors.

The public / media don’t need to know what any GM truly believes

Don’t forget Scotty took out a full page in J de Mtl translated by Marc deFoy of why MB was the best hire amongst all candidates for the Habs job in 2012 - think Scotty’s into karactur?

He must have leveraged his Chicago gleam to the hilt.

Prob got great references from them. I'm sure Julien Brisebois got great references from Gainey but Geoff probably wanted someone completely new.

10 yrs later, Gainey is trendy again and is a regular motivational speaker

I have a pretty good idea what he said in the interview, based on what he's done (not said) since he was hired.

How is that any different than Uncle Lou does? Or Doug Armstrong? They believe in a certain style of game & players who fit that style.

I'm not sure about that. I think The Charlatan could be particularly charismatic when he has someone's ear. Like Timmins, I think he's a top-notch salesman.

MB is a poor man's Uncle Lou. very poor man's version.

Uncle Lou made it on his intelligence....he had never played or coached in the NHL before turning a Mickey Mouse franchise into a semi dynasty.
