Sinclair/Ballys/ESPN/TNT ... broadcasting access, tips and notes

PSA: If you have an AT&T tv product you can get a $20 price break due to their spat with Disney. You have to fill out a very short form. Of course, they could just credit your account without you having to do anything or even know about the offer but that would be to … what’s the word I’m looking for here? … sensible? easy? un-corporate-American?
DirecTV filed a complaint against Disney with the FCC, accusing them of not negotiating in good faith. DirecTV says in its 10-page complaint that Disney is violating the FCC's good faith mandates by asking it to waive any legal claims on any anticompetitive actions, including its ongoing packaging and minimum penetration demands. DirecTV wants to provide bundles that would be cheaper
but could exclude some Disney channels such as FreeForm, FX and NatGeo.

Anybody have experience using 5G wifi for internet connectivity in lieu of Spectrum/ATT internet? I'm looking at TMobile right now.

Not personally, but my next door neighbor had T-Mobile 5G when they moved in and ditched it for fiber after a couple of months. They moved from a condo downtown and he said the coverage there was WAY better. My take ... ask around local to your house and see what's going on in your area.

We live right by Rex Hospital and there's a huge 5G tower here, so I think it should be OK, but as you say, it doesn't hurt to ask around.

I've heard from folks that have no choice but to go this route and said that the connection would be kind of inconsistent. At least one of them switched to fiber when it became available.

Yeah, I live within a mile of a major 5G tower as well, and apparently coverage can still be spotty so it's best to ask around.

More changes in the landscape. AT&T sold their 70% share of DirecTV to private equity firm TPG for $7.6 billion. They had acquired a 30% share in DirecTV in 2021 for about $1.8 billion. AT&T had owned DirecTV since 2015.

At the same time, DirecTV acquired Dish TV for $1, including the assumption of $9.75 billion of debt. The deal also includes Sling TV. DirecTV had attempted to buy Dish in 2002 but was blocked by the FCC. Of course the landscape has changed a little in the last 22 years.

We are quickly heading towards *everything* not purely local will be owned by private equity. And one thing to remember about businesses like that: they are going to get their growth one way or another and none of the choices will result in a better experience/product for us.

On the upside, once private equity management drives basically every service providing business into oblivion, there will still be demand for those services. So ... fresh starts for everybody!

I am fairly certain that this is a direct result of me ditching DirecTV Monday and switching to YouTube TV. The timing is clear and we all know that correlation implies causation.

The Lenovo Center will host a NCAA men’s basketball regional in 2028. The tweet says it’s the first, but IIRC, the 1979 East regional final between St. John’s and Penn was played at Reynolds. Cary also got a boatload of soccer and baseball championships.

Edit: never mind, Reynolds hosted the 1st and 2nd round games. The regional final was at Greensboro. I remember watching on TV and the locals booing when the streamers came out of the stands after the first basket, a Philly Big 5 tradition.

If they mean we're hosting a regional final (ending in an Elite 8 game), then this would be the first. Social media teams use the loosest language sometimes. They're terrified of being wrong so they go vague

So has the dust settled enough for now on the Bally's front that we have to continue to pony up $20 a month for Canes hockey for that Bally's App again until further notice? No more word from Amazon on any changes...

I don't think we know for sure, honestly. They'll drop some info the week before the season starts if the last two years are our guide.

Sure hope we can get a reliable streaming service in time for the season. Not a good look for a professional franchise to have such puny coverage.

In yet another bankruptcy hearing Diamond Sports Group told the judge they’re dropping all MLB teams from their regional networks except the Atlanta Braves. That’s 11 teams losing their broadcaster; Cincinnati, Cleveland, Detroit, KC, LA Angels, Miami, Milwaukee, Minnesota, St. Louis, Tampa and Texas.

I saw something from a Cardinals reporter indicating that the team has had an alternative solution lined up for months and that they've just been waiting for Diamond to make up their minds on how they were going to proceed. I think most of these teams are thrilled to be out of this mess.

And they have an offseason to deal with it, they weren’t dropped in the middle of the season.
