The 2019-2020 MotherFucking Season Thread

Why is Lilly burning a year when he’s only 20 and hasn’t yet played a game with us?

The fact that he turned 20 at the end of last season is the reason why he's burning a year of his ELC. Entry-level deals only "slide" if you're playing outside the NHL and you're a teenager as of September 15th of the season in question.

Hey at least he seems to be over his ‘no American players’ stance from years ago
Imagine having a GM who refuses to get certain players because he wore a particular costume and worked for a particular corporation once? Jesus Christ.

Never said that. I’ve liked lots of American players along the way. JVR, Gardiner, Holl, etc. I was just never a fan of building everything around an American. Arguably we’re doing that right now, but we have so much Toronto representation in the core that I’m very happy with this mix. Heaven forbid Matthews leaves after his deal is up though...

What is the logic behind this?

Petry would definitely be a great add.

Solid top-4 RHD, signed only this year & next for a reasonable amount. That said, I fully expect the Canadiens to be buyers at the deadline rather than sellers, since Bergevin is desperately trying to claw into the playoffs and "win now" to save his job.

Never know, draft in Montreal this year right? If they have another bad month - owners might want more picks?

I really don’t want to rehash this now and deal with all the same comments from the past. But basically I feel most American players wouldn’t really feel a sense of allegiance to a Canadian team the way a Canadian would, but especially a Torontonian in the case of the Leafs. And since we had basically zero GTA players for years, it felt like the mix was wrong, that we’d never win anything with a bunch of mercenaries, most of whom we were trading for and not drafting. But now we have Tavares, Marner and others who grew up wearing the Leafs jersey, and all is right in the world. Though again, if Matty leaves that’ll bring it all back.

Man, we're paying a hell of a lot of money for loyalty.

Noticed Pierre LeBrun said we reached out to Justin Williams, which I can't figure out unless there's a trade coming.

He has always been an analytics darling. I wanted them to grab him instead of marleau a couple years ago.

I can see why dubas would be interested I suppose.

Don?

The only way Matthews would go anywhere is if either he planned to do it the whole time or things go to shit in the next 3-4 years. I guess anything's possible, but the second at least seems doubtful under this management team.

I also would strongly bet against him leaving. I’m assuming he’s a Leaf for life and will be one of the rare players to stick with the same team the whole way. I think Marner will too.

I think Matthews would have signed for 8 years if we could have done so under the cap — I know his agent Orr always stated Matthews wants to be here. I personally don’t think extending him will be a problem.

Why not? Ontario boy comes ring chasing on a minimum deal. Sounds good.

Williams is at the Hurricanes game tonight in a private box with Tom Dundon, wearing a Hurricanes hat. So I'd say it's done.

Still, a good idea to kick the tires on him. He may play a position of strength for us, but he's a legit veteran leaderbean who as recently as last season was still really good. If we could've added him for nothing but money, why not?
