Generational

doesn't even account for his hilarious lack of PP time.

Defenseman who are big, intimidating and who can "mash faces" while also being able to skate and move the puck (especially to the point where they could keep up with our group) are basically unicorns in the modern NHL.

Oddly enough, LOF despises the closest thing we have to that kind of player (Jake Muzzin).

Now, you can still find plenty of immobile slugs who play a hard-nosed style. We had Roman Polak for years, and we've currently got Ben Harpur stashed in the AHL. But those kind of players would be lucky to land one big hit on a Brad Marchand for every 10 goals Marchand scores against them.

pretty sure LoF has hated every big-minute "face masher" we've ever had, whether it be Muzzin, Beauchemin, or Phaneuf.

Gary Roberts pretty much started every shift with a charge. Things have changed drastically.

Oh God, man. It blew me away when I went back and watched highlights of those Leafs/Sens series, or that shit-show of a series against the Islanders. Plays that'd potentially get you double-digit suspensions now were routine back then.

I don’t despise Muzzin at all. I just think he’s way overrated and doesn’t often bring that tough physical game that he’s somehow known for. He gets hit by forwards way more than he hits them himself, and his offense has been kidnapped this season by some force not courteous enough to offer a ransom. Not to mention he grows slower by the day. So I’m fine with him here, but I take exception to people acting like he’s some amazing physical and defensive presence when he’s not, and heaven forbid we resign him and have to endure the rapid deterioration that seems rather imminent.

The media just doesn't get it, in a very profound way.

Andersen is the Leafs MVP and discussing what tough grinders they should add by trade. This is what they're talking about.

they. just. don't. get it.

I mean, in terms of "which player can we least afford to lose", Freddie is right up there considering all we've got behind him is a fringe NHL-backup in Hutch, an average AHL starter in Kaskisuo and a 21 year-old kid with a sub-.900 SV% in the AHL in Joseph Woll,

But we all know that's not what the media's talking about. It's the tired old "Leafs only win because of their amazing goalie bailing out their terrible defense" schtick we've been hearing from them for almost our entire lives, and once again it's entirely divorced from reality.

The issue is, they throw out Hart and Vezina candidate. No player will ever be a finalist for those awards with Freddy's numbers. His actual stats are never mentioned.
He's not even top 20 in save %. His win total is bumped by the great offensive stars he has infront of him.

Under Keefe:

Andersen .916, 12-4-2
Hutchison .908, 3-1-0

no different than most other team's goalie situation.

Yeah, pretty much the textbook definition of average starter/backup goaltending from both of them.
