The 2019-2020 MotherFucking Season Thread

Yeah, there's no reason to move Kappy or any of our young forwards unless a legitimate top pair defender is coming back. We've added Tyson Barrie and Jake Muzzin in the last calendar year FFS. The blueline doesn't need help and the easiest mouth breather test going right now is to wait for someone to talk about the Leafs needing defensive help. Nah, we need Muzzin and Rielly to get healthy (how many teams can go without their #1 and #2 defender for long?) and we need our goaltending to stop sucking shit. To just play to their career averages. Expected goals isn't perfect as a stat, but it's not lying to us either. We're not top 6 in expected goals against, but bottom 6 defensively. The answer is obvious, it's the .888 goaltending we've received over the last month. Almost no one has a 6 pack better than Rielly-Muzzin-Barrie-Holl-Dermott-Ceci and we can improve internally just by firing Ceci out of a cannon and slotting Timmy or Sandin into the top 6. There's your deadline move to improve the blueline.

I'm fine with the right Muzzin extension. There's lots of moveable pieces here to clear cap space should Pietrangelo actually be available at a reasonable number in free agency. But the right extension is like 3x5m or something similar. He does bring a unique skill set to our blueline (physicality, ability to break up the cycle, etc) while still having solid puck skills. Paying him from 31-33 probably isn't going to hurt us. No chance is he worth an overpay though (4x6 or similar), which in fairness is probably something not too far off what he can get on the open market.

Some recent contract comparables:

Hjalmarsson: 2x5
Stralman: 3x5.5
Myers: 5x6
De Haan: 4x4.55
Gardinder: 4x4.05

He falls somewhere in the middle of that group imo.

The good thing about all the injuries is that (1) it shows us how much great depth we have, and (2) it shows us how much we need the depth.

We shouldn't be trading Kappy or Johnsson or Kerfoot or any of our signed talent, unless we get something equally good to better in return. Some awesome young dman who slots into the top 4 and maybe has top pairing potential? Sure. But for some rental or a backup goalie? No fucking way should we entertain that.

And I never hear the price for a backup being that high except if it involves the Leafs.

Looking back at a spreadsheet I created in the offseason to create a contract value on players based simply on their ability to put up points.

2019-2020 to date:

Matthews: value $12.5mil (contract $11.6)
Marner: value $11.2mil (contract $10.9)
Tavares: value $9.3mil (contract ($11.0)
Nylander: value $8.9mil (contract $6.9)

Or ol' greasy mitts wants a couple of days off.

I don't think his shooting style is any harder on the wrists than a conventional style. It's most weight/balance and having a whippy stick.

Joe Sakic/Auston Matthews, best wristers I have ever seen.

Everyone on the internet thought Joe Sakic was a shit gm btw. Two years ago. Uhhhmmm. He ain't lookin too bad nowadays.

I knew but didn't say anything, that a guy with a wrist shot that freaking off the dial, had to know what he was doing.

I didn't say a thing. So no selfies, no likes, but damn, Joe looking pretty good right about now.

The Author of the wrist shot btw? Jacques Lemaire. Insane, wrist shot. Guy could kill a bug from 100 feet away. Definitely the best NHL player of all time for UNSUNG. Guy was off the charts.

Ya agreed he and the training staff probably just want some days off for him. I said it tongue-in-cheek so I could fanboy about his shot.

Its funny that no one talks about, none of the talking heads, about how the wrist shot, literally supplanted the slap shot.

Damn, I had a big, wild, all over the map slapper, but I never really worked on the wrister.

Wrister is 90% right? Of current production?

I never, ever, ever thought that would come about.

Crazy. Jacques Lemaire, Joe Sakic, our guy, who, I am liking more and more every day. I am really starting to like this Matthews kid. Kid is playing really well.

So much to like about our current team.

PLEASE fred, come back to us. You are a very fine goaltender. But you haven't been lately. Come back Fred.

In terms of slap shots. Bobby Hull. Rick Vaive. Off the dial shit. I don't know how they did it. I sure couldn't. Nor could anyone else lol.

Vaive would float in from the blue line, and load up and everyone in the whole building knew what he was going to do, but he still, SCORED>

Crazy, crazy ass talent Rick Vaive had. cool guy to party with as well. But his slapper? Unteachable.

I would LOVE to see Vaive with Marner. Oh my god that would be something.

Slap shot? Watch this? And commentating, much much better than what we have to listen to.

If you have never been to chicago. GO. Greatest USA city imo
