The Fantastically Beautiful Joyously Superfun 22-23 Season Celebration Thread

I think if it's a competitive series and there's some indication they've been provided the tools required but haven't executed, then that's a fair indictment of the coach.

I tend to agree with Artnes that those deadline moves were wholeheartedly Shanny endorsed. I also think our odds of re-signing Matthews go down with a new GM.

Leafs can beat both of these teams quite easily. They always seem to play Boston very competitively and Tampa is mostly coinflip games. The problem is that they're likely 2 coin flip series so you're banking on landing on tails 2 times in a row. And then you may be getting the Canes so toss another coin flip there. Tough no matter what and while not winning a cup this year is technically a failure, it's gonna be really hard for me to be too critical providing they have a strong, competitive showing.
Canes should be easy peasy. They’re not real and likely wont even advance far enough for us to meet them. The other two are legit worries, much less so TB, but Boston kind of seems unbeatable.

I don't think the GM did as good of a job he could have done to give this roster a boost and I don't expect Keefe to do a great job giving this roster much of a boost based on his tendencies. But I happily put the top-end of this lineup against any team in the NHL and while their D is being sabotaged, with the right combinations that can be very good as well. And not talked about enough is that the Leafs goaltending is arguably more stable and better than it has been in years. Samsonov (yes I get being hesitant on trusting him entirely) has been fantastic and there is a world in which he can outplay any goalie in the NHL in a 7 game series.

The volume of moves made this month make me lean towards Dubas not going anywhere. I cant see a lame duck GM having the authority to go scorched earth at the deadline with some confidence from the board
As much as I lament the overhaul, remember that until those last few shitty trades, the narrative around adding ROR, Acciari and McCabe was that he got them all without losing one roster player.

it’s what followed that changed things because suddenly he dumped Engvall and Sandin, and added Schenn. But those moves can hardly be considered an overhaul, just a really shitty development with a meaningful impact.

Its funny because the goaltending has covered up a lot of warts this year, but gets not attention. Which is the exact opposite of the last few years.

But Dubas' Sammy bet is what might save his job.

Agree with this. Some of the moves at this deadline really felt like dubas giving Keefe what he wanted, and if it doesn't work out, he will be the first piece to fall.
This makes sense but it's really old school if so.

the kind of guy you can trust not to lead you to a smelly food truck serving up tacos with filthy ingredients

This is the main reason the Samsonov narrative is what it is. No one trusts or believes in him and they keep finding reasons why he'll eventually implode. Maybe they're right but.. I don't often see this with any other goalie that has been this consistently good this year.

But yes, the point stands. The depth is an issue. A quick fix would be removing Lafferty from the lineup or burying him with single digit minutes; though ideally him and ZAR aren't both playing at the same time because that is guaranteed zero offense with those guys both occupying the bottom 2 lines. ROR coming back will help too. And the ultimate dream is Knies being NHL ready.

Mirtle reported earlier in the season that Matthews and nerd have a really good relationship and will have some weight in extending.

How many goalies are there that haven't imploded? Say something a million times and you're bound to be right one day.

I still don't get why getting along with a GM matters here, I agree with Habsy. He doesn't deal with Dubas at all unless he's negotiating a contract which happens 1-3 months every 5-8 years. What does it matter if Dubas is in Toronto or not? It's a decision that goes well beyond a simple friendship with a guy that he will barely see or speak to if he signs with Toronto IMO.
