The Mother-fucking goddamn Off-season Thread

Yup, I think you and I were the only ones back then that freaked over those trades, at least the Engvall one for sure. I recall you waiting for me to see it while in London and correctly predicting my imminent rage over the moves.

It was so dumb, so fucking dumb that there was no possible explanation for it. And to have TWO of those in separate deals on the same night, jesus, that was bad.
your recollections are inaccurate. a whole host of us were quite upset with the day of Swedish doom. hell, Dubas lost zeke!

The Raz trade will obviously hurt them waaaay more but the Engvall trade stuck out for me even more. You could sorta justify Raz being the odd man out.. They preferred McCabe at his AAV the next 2 years, he'd be on the 3rd pair and they can flip the 1st they got for him for a foward (lol). But the Engvall one was.. Out of all of their depth pieces, they trade the best possession player? So they can insert guys like ZAR, Lafferty, Kerf at 3.5m, Jarn? From a progressive analytics-based approach that we always assumed Kyle had, it made 0 sense. It hurt me and I "overreacted" because of what it meant.. Kyle was officially a boomer "hockey man."
burke with glasses, one might say

It's not a good look for things. For anything. It portrays a bunch of people that don't understand that the objective here is to win the Stanley Cup. who were obviously entirely too comfortable and content given the team's results.

maybe these guys all forgot they were working in pro sports??

there needs to be a culture reset in Toronto.

is that even possible with Shanahan here? guess we'll see.

This last week should be an eye opener for Shanny. People always talked about a country club atmosphere in the dressing room but it was clearly it was the head office that has developed into Club Med

the zen brigade lost a lot of members after the trade deadline this year.

this guy included.

definitely zeke and presto as well.

think HL and artnes stuck it out.

I'm sure I'm missing others.

to be fair we had still barely recovered from the Murray trade.

"So I get moving him if they're going to upgrade on him. As of right now his replacement is Lafferty though and that's not gonna cut it for me."

Narrator: there was no upgrade.
"I've got no issues with them trading Engvall if they're also cleansing Kerfoot and removing the soft ass bitches to replace with big hard mean guys that can also play hockey. If the direction they want to take is being "hard" as a team then go for it. Swap Kerf for Crouse. I don't even necessarily think it improves them all that much but it does make them different. And maybe that's what they need. Hard to know for sure."

First of all, you're out of the Pierre club if you ever indicate that it was okay to trade him. Second of all, you didn't say you were good with it if it was an upgrade - you said if they were going from "soft ass bitches" to "hard guys" (gay), you were good with it. That disqualifies you twice because anyone would approve an upgrade on Pierre (a Pierre Plus, if you will), but you were approving a shift to a different style of play with different types of players. Don't bother showing up for the next meeting.

It's funny, this shit happens all the time in my world. Just today to me, even.

Lawyers in the entertainment world often represent clients' managers and agents as a favor. Sometimes for free, or some bullshit flat rate, but just as a scratch your back kinda thing so that they're in your debt and look out for you in the future. Looks like Matty's agent was doing that for Kyle here, and what great timing, just as they were about to negotiate Matty's extension.

It was early last season, when the team was stumbling badly out of the gate in October, that Dubas gathered the entire Leafs operation together for a meeting.

He calmed a tense group down. “Be the best you can be,” he told them all. “Just do what you do.”

The overriding message: Everything was fine. The team would be OK. And indeed, the Leafs finished with the second-best record in the league from Nov. 1 onward.

To at least one person who works for the Leafs, this past season felt like the first time when everybody in the organization was pulling in the same direction.

So apparently the only time in Dubas 5 year tenure that this person felt the organization was all "pulling in the same direction" was since last November - i.e. the last 6 months of his tenure.

That's not a compliment to the GM.

Okay fine fine I'll trade in my Pierre fanboy card. You remain the prez.
