The Mother-fucking goddamn Off-season Thread

Dubas did a really good job overall, and it is kind of silly to create a bunch of revisionist history to make it seem like he was incompetent. The regular season numbers speak for themselves.

Unfortunately, so do the playoff numbers. He made mistakes, for sure, but as discussed so does every GM. I would have preferred he stay on with a new coach, but I can understand why Shanny got cold feet, after Dubas got cold feet.

now it's time to get busy tree-living or get busy tree-dying.

1) you’re kinda proving my point, by demonstrating how little you value the skill I referenced.

2) he absolutely could have made egregious signings, if he’d traded one of the core four, signed the James Neal and Kadri type contracts for two players instead of going for Tavares…..he could have not extended Rielly and spent that cash on Markstrom

…there’s a million different ways to fuck things up that look to have been so simple with hindsight. and we see it all around the league, all the time.

pinned.

I love the optimism…but Trelivings history has some pretty big botches all over it.
I wouldn't do this. It's going to limit your enjoyment of the Leafs if they do succeed. For some, being right is more important than their team succeeding. Don't do that.

IMO they need a couple centers, and to give the kids a legit shot.

Knies-Matthews-Marner
Tavares-XXX-Willy
Robertson-XXX-XXX
Jarnkrok-Holmberg-Lafferty/blahblah blah

And they have a ton of cap space to make impact additions there too.

If they could add a top 4 D to push McCabe down the lineup that would be ideal too.

Rielly-Lilly
Brodie-XXX
McCabe-Timmins
Gio

Unbelievable that we need centers...again.

Five years ago at the end of 17/18 we had:

20 year old Auston Matthews
27 year old Nazem Kadri
22 year old William Nylander...who wasn't playing center, but had played center his whole life and was only two years removed from dominating the AHL as a 19/20 year old center.

Then we signed 27 year old John Tavares for $11 million.

Now somehow we need to fix out fucking centers.

Tans is mad that people here don't think Dubas is the GM of the century and thus automatically thinks Treliving will be a dud.

I'm open to the idea that good GMs exist outside of Dubas.

We are at a crossroads I think.
We need to hurry up and decide. Draft is around the corner.

Unbelievable our biggest weakness as an org is down the middle...again.

We don't.

i was not interested in signing Markstrom to a deal like that, but it is kind of funny that he took a home run swing on a potentially elite goalie, as opposed to the Dubas route of ignoring the position year after year and then trading for Matt Murray.

and both approaches failed because goalies.

dubas’s biggest failing is not drafting a single forward who can slot into their top 6.

the leafs path to success depended on it, imo.

how good would the leafs look with mangia and dube on the wings, or with some draft / prospect capital from dealing those guys once they were priced out?

The least important draft in Leaf history
That's what we want them to think.

You really believe we traded a great young Sandin signed for $1.4M for a 1st rounder if we weren't going to draft the next Kucherov with that Boston pick?

Sorry Knies took too long to get here for you

no way man, all we needed to do was ride Pontus Holmberg and Alex Steeves all the way to the Cup Finals

Or he could've just kept Hyman, kept McCann, signed some cheapie like Niederreiter, hit a home run with Verhaeghe.

I know this JT to the wing thing has taken root but JT is still a better C than most Cs in the league.
Didn't JT ask Keefe to try him on the wing when they added ROR? Doesn't sound like a guy who thinks he's still hacking it as a top centre, or particularly wants the responsibility anymore.
