I think it was usually a case of "is there someone we really really want here? that we rate much higher than this draft slot? if not, trade down". But sometimes there was someone available that they had rated many slots higher that they would just take - like Knies.
 
I honestly wouldn't hate seeing us make the Carter Hart trade, go Hart + Woll in tandem and sell high on Sammy who was good but I just don't trust going forward.

I betcha we could turn Sammy and stuff into a functioning forward of similar age and relative quality. Think something like Nick Schmaltz (who we should be trying to rescue from Arizona right now regardless).

We're gonna see Treliving earn his money on decisions just like these.

The core isn't moving, but all the others are fair game.

I'd think Sammy is pretty safe though. Even though it may wind up being disastrous, I'd expect them to move Woll over Sammy if it came down to it. I doubt they'd just accept that he's for real.

Goalies who are "battling out there" terrify me, guys who calmly let the puck hit them don't. Sammy was a good soldier for us and I dig the whole personal accountability thing without considering self harm mental makeup of his. But his reversion into a sub .900 pumpkin in the playoffs definitely makes me think twice about paying him. Would be different if we had him under cheap control for another year and weren't forced into a Woll decision now.

No easy decisions here. But if we can get Hart for a decent price and turn Sammy and stuff into a 2nd line calibre forward, that's tidy business imo.

Schmaltz would be a great pickup. And he’s owed a lot of real cash so they’d probably be happy to dump him. send them Muzzin’s contract too.
 
Pay the premium and get Hellebuyck. This is the one area where Treliving can swing for the fences.

we might finally go into a playoff series with the better goalie.

Problem is that Winnipeg is allegedly looking for players now and we have a shortage on good ones of those.

Willy for Helly is a bad trade imo. Not sure what else we have to entice them into moving a top 5 goalie.
 
Also, I'm not trading anything of substance for a goalie. Nothing. No mention of Nylander should be made in this context.

Helle would just join us and immediately fall on his face in net because asshole. Forget it.

He's been below .910 once in his career, and above .915 5 times, so I don't think is the best characterization of him.

To answer your question though, he's a top 5 starter in the league imo and about as good of a bet to continue being one as anyone. There's only a handful of guys in the league who handle true starter workloads while consistently delivering above average performance. Shesty, Sorokin, Helly, Saros and Vasy. Oettinger looks like he's about to join that group shortly.

Everyone else is a tandem goalie or a backup imo.

You are right... not sure what DB was showing me yesterday, looked like a .905-.910 rating.

yeah it's a tough call, but that's why they get paid a lot of money to make these kind of decisions. i am okay with a Samsonov/Woll tandem but there is a fairly strong likelihood that we're once again fielding the 2nd best goalie in the first round, even if Sammy is decent.

It makes a lot of sense to upgrade this position. I doubt you could get Schmaltz for Samsonov+ but would certainly take a look at what's out there, including price checks on Hellebuyck and Hart. But Carter makes a lot of sense...
