The Mother-fucking goddamn Off-season Thread

yeah it's a tough call, but that's why they get paid a lot of money to make these kind of decisions. i am okay with a Samsonov/Woll tandem but there is a fairly strong likelihood that we're once again fielding the 2nd best goalie in the first round, even if Sammy is decent.

It makes a lot of sense to upgrade this position. I doubt you could get Schmaltz for Samsonov+ but would certainly take a look at what's out there, including price checks on Hellebuyck and Hart. But Carter makes a lot of sense...

There's a bunchof second line forwards that are probably available. Schmaltz, Garland, Johansen, Duchene, Hayes, Kuznetsov, Couturier, Schenn, Backlund. Depending on where the sweet spot of shared risk is on contract length/retention, I think Sammy could be the centrepiece to land us one of them.

But is sammy+ for helle a trade that could make sense if they can sign him?

If the Jets are trading Hellebuyck but aren’t committed to a rebuild and want to try and stay competitive, you’d think Samsonov would be an attractive part of the package.

If they buy him as for real, sure.

That's a solid sized 'if' though.

would eat up some capspace but Duchene or Couturier sure would be interesting.

Would be an interesting enough shift to trade Sammy for one of these guys, and then take Hart and give them Murray plus and roll with Hart/Woll.

I think there's a very real chance Sammy is the best of the bunch and we lose in this exchange, but adding the forward, ditching Murray, and rolling the dice on Hart is an enticing move.

Unless by some miracle Murray just vanishes from the cap, signing Sammy around $3.5 (or better) for 2-3 years and trotting out Murray and Woll in relief wouldn't be terrible.

Can Arizona take anymore garbage contracts?

Cuz I would love to see Muzzin paid his bonus and see if we could ship him off with Murray for one of their monster goalies or for anyone else. Throw in a Steeves or Lafferty and see what you can get.

There wouldn’t be any benefit to trading away Muzzin though, aside from saving MLSE some cash. He’s on LTIR forever so for all intents and purposes doesn’t count against the cap.

But being in LTIR is bad. Being able to accrue cap space and call up players is a big benefit.

I suppose. But with the team always operating right up against the cap it seems like we inevitably end up in LTIR in short order anyway once Nick Robertson and another player or two gets injured.

Plus, even if Muzzin is only owed $2M in cash after his bonus is paid, you’re still going to have to flush some assets down the toilet to dump that.

It would because then you'd be paying Murray $5M to platoon as backup, and taking up an extra roster spot to keep Woll from going on waivers.

If it came right down to it, buying out Murray would be a preferable option to that. $690K cap hit this year and $2M the year after to buy him out.

Arizona takes these guys essentially for free because insurance pays the money so they can meet the cap floor for free. Muzzin has value to them, its not paying them to do us a solid.

When guys actually get hurt fine, you do what you have to do, but there is no value in keeping a guy who 100% won't come back and play. Its nice that they can make Muzzin disappear, but its not ideal.
