The Mother-fucking goddamn Off-season Thread

If I'm understanding this right they could roughly structure it as:

8 year deal: 17.25, 17.25, 17.25, 17.25, 12.75, 8.75, 8.75, 8.75

5 year deal: 17.25, 17.25, 14, 10, 9

81.75 mil in 5 years vs 67.5 with proper investment of the funds (10% per year) it would take a massive next contract to do better.

Likely into the 20s per season

Based on a max of a 35% movement year over year and a max drop from peak salary to lowest of 50%

Not sure i see the argument for Matthews to be worth substantially more than MacKinnon, whose 8 x $12.6m deal starts this year. Matthews has the advantage on the regular season nerdies (though MacKinnon is still awesome there as well), but MacKinnon has a big advantage in scoring stats. And in the playoffs i'd wager MacKinnon beats him on both and proved he can lead a team to a cup.

I also see more motivation for MacKinnon to max out this deal, given how little he made on his previous deal, and given that he already won a cup.

Matthews has made double what MacKinnon did on his pre-UFA deal, and has zero playoffs success - much more incentive for Matthews to not max out than there was for MacKinnon.

"Sorry to be so insulting, Auston, but we're offering you MacKinnon's contract, the biggest contract in league history, even though he won a cup and outscores you substantially."

I'm only asking for around 10% more because I think I'm better and two years younger + my contract starts later with only two years at that guaranteed low escrow rate.

Worried about how much you're paying Matthews is dumb when you waste money on Kerfoots and Murrays
This is a weird argument you keep making.

You're basically saying, give extra to Matthews and then just don't sign bad contracts.

How about not giving Matty more than we need to, and then using the saved dollars to sign more good players?

I assume they're not actively trying to sign more underperforming Kerfs and Murrays.

I like Hanifin, but don't love.

though i just checked the nerdies and he actually seemed to do better than Andersson in similar but maybe even slightly tougher usage.

more important take for me is that yeah you gotta overpay to keep players in calgary.
