The Mother-fucking goddamn Off-season Thread

Matthews doesn’t have all the leverage if he wants to play in Toronto. Only one club can offer that. He does if he doesn’t actually care where he plays, isn’t worried about injury, and just wants max money on whatever term. Guess we’ll see.

But you're not paying for what he did, but what you project him to do going forward.
If the prior season had been this season, k concede, we’re fucked, he’s justified in asking for anything he wants.

But if dropping from 60 to 40 and again having no playoff success worth speaking of doesn’t buy us some kind of discount, then what the fuck are we even doing? Just send him a contract with a blank where the salary is supposed to go and countersign whatever he sends back.

this is among your top 5 ideas

Which is weird, because he's wrong.
I’m not wrong. I’ve never said Tavares is providing $11m of value right now in the back end of his deal. I’ve said that that was the fair market value when he signed it, under market even if SJ and others were willing to pay $14m, and that he deserved it as a 27 year old proven 1C signing a long term UFA deal, and that there’s zero sense in dumping him now with two years left when he’s still putting up 35+ goals and 80+ points.

What he’s actually earning in the final two years of a UFA deal has nothing to do with what Matty should rightfully ask for on an extension with his current team.

Im like 99% sure this is in English, but i'll be damned if i haven't re-read this several times and dont understand.

I’m “defending” Tavares from the standpoint that he’s still a very good player, should not be traded, and would not be adequately replaced with a reallocation of $11m to other players.

The subject of Matthews here is what he should justifiably be demanding when extending a year before he goes free, and I’m saying his down year and early playoff exit yet again shouldn’t justify paying him like he’s the best player in the league like he arguably was two seasons ago.

These have nothing to do with each other.

Thats basically how you negotiate with that level of player. Basically with a blank check and hope that he's not trying to fuck you.

You have, at length, argued that Tavares is worth 11 because san Jose offered him 13.5....there is 15-16 million x 7 waiting for Auston next summer if he wants it. Everyone knows what the market for him would be like.
