The Mother-fucking goddamn Off-season Thread

AA would have taken a big swing at Ekholm. Dubas took the safe route. The years of control, sweet spot of shared risk route. I was hoping McCabe had a lot more to give and he truly was a Muzzin and that would have changed everything, but alas, he was not.
AA and Dubie’s big swing would’ve/should’ve been Karlsson, not Ekholm. And that would’ve gotten us through this round for sure.

Everyone just needs to take a breather and realize it isn't the end of the world.

Sigh.

Now that we're there, realize we lost this series to a hot goalie that stood on his head in the first few games and the hole was too big to dig out of. Classic poker match. Get the big stack and then lean on the others. They leaned on us and caught the breaks we couldn't.

Tough loss, but this isn't broken. We're in a great position cap wise and have a few key decisions to make.

1. Front office is a toss-up, so who knows.

- Shanny could be moved on from, but the culture of professionalism and tight-lipped control is working. So it's tough to say
- Dubas.. well it ain't on him, he's been a wizard each year navigating the crunch that happens when you have a team of stars to manage.
- Maybe Keefe is the scape-goat, so it's totally possible he's gone. Have to have the right coach to step in though...

2. As the team -- it start with one major question... does Matthews want to be here and sign an extension?

- If yes, good lock him up. If no, gonna have to trade him before he walks. Simple as that.
- Tavares is untradeable, so he's not leaving.
- Rielly has a NMC and want to be here, so he isn't leaving. And he showed up in the playoffs anyways, 12pts in 11 games and a +11 and played like an absolute gamer in both series.
- Marner could be traded but why? He WANTS to be a Leaf and you're gonna lose that trade if you move him. What he needs is protection. Not more speed and skill.
- And Nylander stepped up when we had our backs against the wall in games 4 and 5, showing he's got the game-breaking ability. On a great contract, PPG winger and 40 goal scorer. Tough to see us moving him next year too.

So really it's a question of, is this a step forward making the second round and the team wants to push through. Or does Matthews want out and start a chain reaction of changes.

I truly think Matthews will be the first step, but this team and the way it's built in terms of cap space is in a great position heading into a pivotal offseason.

Geez, these guys are just the unluckiest motherfuckers ever, eh?

Year after year, they lose in the playoffs through no fault of their own to goalies who just stood on their heads! And often goalies with a lengthy recent track record at being shit at their jobs too.

Poor unlucky Leafs.

still not sure he was ever a viable option. The numbers weren’t there to make it work. Maybe earlier in the season you could pull it off but with the moves they made up to that point it wasn’t happening

There was definitely a way. Believe zeke worked out the numbers. The only downside is that they would have to trade Kerfoot. Which is a no-no.

It’s true; Leafs D needed high end, not more depth.

And the Murray trade was a fiasco; his playoff pedigree was his allure but he fell behind Woll on the depth chart.

What will he do with Murray? And what about Tavares who’s now an 11M dollar non elite winger?

Do nothing with him. He’ll provide the same production. And we have a handful of deserving kids ready to play so we don’t need to go replace Kerf or Holl. There’s plenty of money, so you don’t dump Tavares to free up a couple mill and then run around trying to find 35-40 goals for $8m or $9m. You dump Murray and his $5m because he’s completely worthless here.

Nah, you do both. Because a slow, aging 2nd line winger who has been combined -15 5v5 over the last 2 season, and a massive wet fart in the playoffs as a Leaf isn't worth 11 millie.

If he'll waive his NMC, wave goodbye and move on. The alternative is the publicly embarass him by stripping the C, and push him out of his position and onto the wing without having a lot of coin to do it with.

But yes, the Murray move has also turned into a predictable debacle.

Try to swap Tavares and Karlsson. They'll want more but it does change your whole dynamic in one fell swoop.

No change. He had as many goals as anyone other than Matthews, and Matthews only had one more.

Why do we distinguish the moistness of the fart when they all put up goose eggs this round?

You're obsessed with his $11M. Just enjoy another 60-80 goals out of him for the next two years and then wave goodbye, or bring him back on a cheap deal.

Because John has been the worst offender of the 4 since the start of the "we can and we will" era.

Of course I am, there's a salary cap and dude makes over 1/8th of it. Paid like a 99th percentile player while being an 85th percentile player hurts.

lol "60-80"

60 goals for 22 million is an epic waste of money. 80 is not. Yuge difference.

We will not win anything with him leading us. He doesn't play "playoff hockey" nor is he fast and skilled enough to make gamebreaker type plays at 5v5. He's basically prime JVR at this point, for 11 million.

How about if he just repeats twice and hits 72 goals? Does that meet the magic threshold for approval?

He looked good enough to me in the playoffs. Better than everyone except Rielly and Nylander. Scored the winning goal against TB, made the nice little pass to Willy for his tying goal yesterday. He's criminally underappreciated because he makes $11M. You can ditch him and then go spend $6M on two players to get you those 80 goals that he might get you by himself.
