The Mother-fucking goddamn Off-season Thread

Hard to know without seeing what their list looked like. He might have been ranked much higher for them than anyone that would have been available there. Obviously they made the decision that they didn't want to risk losing him after they already lost out on their preferred target, moldy dick.

If I knew more about prospects, actually watched them, and evaluated the data that isn't available to the public I'd probably have a stronger opinion on whether they were right or not. But for now I can only assume what they were thinking based on the actions that took place.
Hard to escape the feeling that picks like this are brought on more than anything by a desire to be the smartest guy in the room. Literally nobody on the fucking planet ranked him below 32. Exactly zero expert rankings had him as a first rounder. Now, there have been hidden gems before, but it’s tough to fathom that there’s some objective basis for needing to take this guy over others with better stats and general consensus on upside. This pick is for being declared a genius one day because nobody else thought to even rank him as high as you took him.

Hold up. Let's not make things up now. Treliving had nothing to do with the player who was picked. The draft was entirely run by Kyle's guy Wes Clark. And Calgary's draft record far exceeds the Dubas-led Leafs draft record.
Yeah, this is a Clark pick. If Dubas is still here I think he does the same thing.

July 1 is where we see Treliving more IMO. Which might scare me a little too.

On the other hand the expected value difference between a late 1st and a mid 2nd ain't all that much. So if he was gonna be picked in the middle of the 2nd round we're not talking about a significant EV deficit here.

Oh ya. Nothing to do with it. Puppet GM. Didn't have a say at all.

It's absolutely a frightening thought. Plenty of reason to be scared. Attributing this draft pick to Treliving is obviously entirely bullshit.

1. It implies that a mistake was made (we don't know that yet)
2. It implies that teams under his power are worse at drafting than the Leafs have been (false)
3. It implies that he did any work on the draft at all (he has said he basically knows nothing about the work done by the scouts and will follow the lead of Wes Clark)

I am all for bitching. It's my specialty after all. But let's keep our bitching reasonable, folks.

Firstly I said it's a Calgary type pick and it is

Secondly if you think Treliving had no say then that tracks with Pittsburgh not tampering. Naaawwww. These guys are the models of ethics, morality and following rules.

Not really. Calgary went for grand slams. It's a pure Dubas-led Leafs pick in every single way imaginable. High IQ player with some "bite" that has low upside but higher probability of making it than some of the home run options. That's a Leafs pick all the way.

Yup. I made the connection right away and it was fairly obvious. As soon as Moldy dick got picked they tried to trade down and obviously nothing materialized and they didn't want to trade down too low because they simply loved the player and didn't want to miss out on him. Was easy to figure out I think.

Moldy dick would have been nice. Too bad.

It's precisely a Calgary type leap.

Also, didn't they come out and say they're changing their playing style?

Wes Clark has been drafting Easton Cowan's for years. It isn't hard to figure out who made the pick. Hint: It was the guy who announced the player at the podium.
Hint: its still on Tre.

Or are you one of those pass the blame guys?

Despite his production, if Cristall's skating is as bad as the scouts say, they made the right call not taking him

Corey Pronman - The Athletic - May 30th: "Cristall is so dangerous on the power play because of his skill but also his great shot, as he's scored a ton of goals from range this season. The concerns come down to his frame and especially his skating."

Steven Ellis - Daily Faceoff - May 29th: "From a skill perspective, Cristall has everything going for him. His skating can be a bit of a disaster at points, though. In a vacuum, there’s a lot to like."

Tre's job was to trade down as soon as their player got drafted by Nashville. If you want to call that a failure, sure. We can say that. But Wes picks the players.
