The Mother-fucking goddamn Off-season Thread

I’m the #1 Treliving hater around here and I hate the Reaves & Kampf deals with every fibre of my being.

That said, he’s definitely done a fair bit to balance out the other side of the ledger by letting Kerfoot walk and signing Bertuzzi & Domi to good deals.

The Klingberg deal I’m iffy on, but real offense from our back end has unquestionably been an issue for a bit now. As long as Klingberg’s not another Barrie in that he’s a complete gong-show defensively and gets most of his points by cannibalizing Rielly’s power-play minutes.

If we look at Out/In and omit deadline added FA's (I don't think adding a guy for a dozen games and a playoff run makes him one of yours really), our situation looks like this:

Out:
- Kerfoot
- Holl
- Bunting
- ZAR

In:
- Bertuzzi
- Klingberg
- Domi
- Reaves

I take the bottom group 100 times out of 100. Shit, any "Out" group only starts to sting when you start adding things we traded away at the deadline ffs.

he's probably more of a gong show defensively than Barrie.

but he's probably a much more dynamic even strength offensive creator than barrie ever was.

The only one in the “out” group I would have had any interest in retaining at all is Bunting. And only on a cheap-O deal after this past season and two pretty lacklustre playoff performances.

And even including Dubas’s deadline UFA’s, the only one of note for me was O’Reilly. And he was good, not great. And his lack of footspeed was uniquely painful on a team that already has John Tavares in a prominent role.

I wanna see mucho mucho Rielly-Klingberg ozone shifts with Matthews-Marner pls. He's gonna have to be used properly but I think there's enough there to be hopeful.

There will be several gong shows that result defensively but it's a lock to result in more goals I think. He's a player that suits this teams strengths, whereas Kyle added guys that do the opposite of Klingberg, Domi, Bertuzzi all in the name of balance. That didn't work really (guys like yarnfoot always felt like miscasts) so hopefully this does work...

There is something to be said for supplementing your superstars with talent as opposed to gudpro black holes though. I would think that's how you get the most out of your team. You'd hope they aren't as one dimensional as some of the guys the Leafs added but I'm more hopeful than I was last couple of summers, that's for sure. Partially because it's an entirely new direction and partially because it makes more sense to me.

We've rarely been beat in the playoffs because the other team's star players went nuts on us. We've been beat because Verhaege is better than people knew, Palat, Colton & Nick fucking Paul made differences, two random goalies went supernova.....Corey Perry....etc, etc, etc.

The only time this Leafs group has been run over by a superstar playing like a superstar and deep dicking them was Pastrnak with 13 points in 7 games a bunch of years ago.
