The Mother-fucking goddamn Off-season Thread

I was thinking if an owner would build a new arena. I know they love their hockey is all.
The issue of the success of a market is keeping bums in the seats and selling out corporate boxes. Halifax has a better corporate base than Quebec City but is still an outpost as far as travel. I am not sure that either market has a strong corporate base.

it would be an interesting case study though. It would be very interesting if the arena in Halifax could be expanded.

I think they keep it in Arizona. I wonder if Suns new owner makes it happen. Suns play in a stadium downtown Arizona. Built in 92. Maybe he makes it work for a new dual purpose arena.

Best part of a Mooseheads game used to be sub-$10 arena beers. But it’s been a few years since I’ve gone so that’s prolly no longer the case.
Based upon a cap of 82,000,000 USD and a seating of 10,000, you would need to sell every ticket for close to 200.00 USD (270.00 CAD) to cover player salaries. And that doesn’t begin to cover travel expenses which would rival Vancouver for costs

That is a tough business plan.

Guessing it’s a little more complicated then that? Doesn’t the team keep a part of merch sales, consessions, tv revenue?

There are other variables, yes. For example, not every team budgets for the maximum cap.

At the high end, in 2022, NYR and LA both had 249 million in revenue, and the Leafs were only 1 million behind. Even if they spent 100 million dollars, they still bagged a lot of money. Montreal, Boston, Vegas, Seattle and Edmonton all are also very profitable teams

One would have to look at small market centers to see how they manage. In Buffalo and Winnipeg's case they have deep pockets in the ownership level. That not only helps. that changes everything. Other teams struggle to sell out every night.

In Canada, outside of Ottawa, getting bums in the seats is easy. Making bags of money, isn't.

As much as I want London,. Hamilton makes the most sense. Though I doubt I'd go there very often for games.
The GTA is underserved for NHL hockey. Hamilton"s arena is old. When Blackberry was going to buy it, the cost to refurbish then was prohibitive.
And it certainly hasn't aged well.

Halifax is a fair bit smaller than Hamilton is and doesn't have any cities surrounding it like Hamilton does (Metro Hamilton is almost double the population of Metro Halifax) and Hamilton couldn't support a team on it's own without nearby cities.

Throw in the stuff that's a relatively short drive though:

- St Catherines/Niagara : 450K
- K/W & Cambridge tri city: 600K
- Brantford: 150K
- Oakville: 200K
- Guelph: 150K

Shit, put the arena outside the west end of the city and London (550K) is within reach (pretty easy Go Train extension to run as well, would have 40ish minute travel times).

Halifax doesn't really have any of that. 500K population with a few hundred K scattered throughout the province.

Way too small.
If you're going to include KW and St Catharines which are both 40ish min, you might as well include Mississauga at 800K. From downtown Hamilton you can hit the west end of Mississauga in 30min and be at Pearson in 45.

Hamilton is basically just the west end of the GTA at this point. Coyotes everywhere too, just keep the name.

Call them the Ontario Coyotes instead of Hamilton and it would legit rival the Leafs.

Yeah, I omitted Brampton & Mississauga because they feel a bit more true "GTA" than the other stuff mentioned and there's more Leafs pull the closer to the centre you get. But absolutely, they're close enough to have an impact on a Hamilton team. Combined they're roughly twice the size of Hamilton by themselves.

League wants large USA metro areas to help grow TV revenues and fan bases

But doesn't want to bother with international best on best.

What would the value to the NHL be of seeing the US men's national team win a gold medal at the olympics?

Oh...right, we know.

Huh?? But he’s so slow and bad and we should trade him for nothing.

Way worse than ROR who is somehow cut off the list despite being above Drai.
