TML? More like FML, amirite? Yet Another Off Season Thread

Steeves also didn't look NHL ready in his few games last year, but had a solid AHL season. Yeah, Holmberg might be the guy. Some guys transition beautifully from SHL to NHL. I question whether he can play down the lineup though without some AHL reps to get used to the speed and physicality. He's unlikely to be top 6 at this point (though might have enough offensive chops to be a complimentary 2LW in the not so distant future)
I love Swedes. Just the name gives me comfort and optimism.

They convinced him to leave college early. The deal was always to get him in as many games as possible to hold up their end of the bargain. I don't think that stint necessarily meant that they love him. If he continues to look like that (and he's sorta at that age where he is what he is, backed up by ok college stats) then I don't think they'll continue shoehorning him into the lineup.

He was not just bad, but terrible, no matter what metric you look at.

They just rave about him and his hockey IQ anytime anyone in the organization talks about him. And thats the type of player they love.

I don't know about shoehorning him into the lineup, but I definitely don't think they see him as a "he is what he is" make the team in training camp or bust guy.

question will always be if he has the actual skills and ability to match. so far the answer is no but obviously that can change.

Needs a full season in the AHL for us to see what he is as a pro. Should be .8-.9ppg+ if he's going to be anything.

In any event the ceiling has to be very low. It's hard to get too horny over him. The IQ thing can only get you so far. But yes, having a high IQ, responsible cheap 4th liner does hold value so I hope it works out.

His college stats already told me that he's a longshot and his first cup of tea in the NHL confirmed that for me. Next year is probably where we find out if there's any future at all. As ME said .8-.9ppg+ in the AHL is required, otherwise he's not much of a prospect heading into the 2023-2024 season at 24 years of age.

23...but yeah, still.

He's 2-3 months younger than Holmberg with all of that sexy SHL experience. 6 months older than Steeves, only a year younger than Joey Anderson, almost a year older than Douglas. Well over 2 years older than Robertson, 15 months older than SDA (who was disappointing with his .6ppg AHL rook season as a 21 yr old).

He's not young. He's either going to be really good in the AHL more or less right off the hop, or there's no "there" there.

Another guy Dubas can’t shut up about for some reason is Bobby McMann.

After Moore and Marchment I don’t question these guys anymore. Those guys had like .5 ppg in the AHL at 22-23.

They can work with tools. Some seemingly meh prospect is going to become a good player.

Moore was .85 at 22, Marchment .75 at 23

That's the problem with the guys who take a long time to develop, it's very rarely the team that developed them that they break out for. For our purposes, we need to be giving those 22-23-24 yr olds real NHL opportunities and then they sink or swim. We're not going to be able to play them as liabilities for 2-3 years here, and we know we're not getting anything that can take a NHL shift through waivers.

SN article about Gaudreau and Tkachuk and how American players want to leave when their time is up and how Leafs fans are “very likely” to be in the same situation with Matty next year.

For now, I will laugh at this bullshit, but I will breathe a sigh of relief when we lock him up.

You can bet that the likes of Dreger & Lebrun and their Sportsnet equivalents will get as much mileage as they can out of “lol, Matthews is leaving Toronto” stories right up until the point he signs his extension.
