TML? More like FML, amirite? Yet Another Off Season Thread

They can flip him. Whether immediately or wait till the deadline. He’s a much better chip to flip than Kerf who’s expiring.
acquire an asset that immediately helps your rebuild, or acquire an asset that you then need to find a way to jettison to acquire assets that will eventually help your rebuild?

I can't see CHI picking the former, but I know you hate Muzz and he must be included in any hypothetical transactions you contemplate so here we are

8 teams is a lot.

Kane price will be higher than most people here think. (And Leafs should definitely pay it… I would trade Knies + Robertson + 1st in a heartbeat…. are you really gonna let 3 B+ hopefuls stand in your way of the Cup?)

He’s by far the best rental to hit the market in recent memory. Game changer.
especially if you get him for the full season*

Knies + Robertson + 1st is maybe a bit rich for me though.

I mean yeah, trade prospects and whatnot but hockey isn't like the NBA. Sacrificing the future for 1 year of a super elite player is not always worth it; it increases your odds of winning the cup in year 1 but decreases them in years 2, 3, 4, 5, 6+ to the point where it may not be a net benefit in the end.

But Knies and Robertson may not be gamechangers anyway. Especially Knies. I probably do the trade.
I do Knies + 1st + Kerf/salary without hesitation.

you gonna let Robertson stand in the way of assembling the runaway best top 6 in recent hockey history?

Kane helps the top-6 for one season.

Robertson potentially helps the top-6 for the next five years, at a relative discount. Given our top-heavy structure, we need to draft and develop guys like that to have a hope in hell of succeeding. And punting them when we do for a rental is not how I would manage those assets.

I dunno...if guys like Nick Foligno can get a first rounder plus, you have to think Kane will fetch exponentially more

yeah...but not too difficult to replace year to year with guys like Bunting and McCann...Patrick Kane OTOH

Anyway, I hope for your sake that Dubas has more killer instinct than most of the armchair GMs here

If you think Robertson is gonna be a first line 30+ goal scorer then trading him+ stuff for Kane will be a net negative, absolutely. This isn't basketball. There isn't a Kawhi out there that guarantees you win a cup or go to the finals in any particular year. Different sport. 5+ years of Robertson, if he's truly a 30+ goal scoring 1st line winger, is gonna offer more value than 1 year of Kane. Which, in turn, increases your chances of winning a cup in any one of those years.

But..... I don't particularly think it's very likely Robertson is that guy. So I agree, I'd probably make that trade.

Robertson thus far can't even stay on his feet in a corner in the NHL. the gulf between what he's shown so far and 30 goal 1st liner is vast.

That's my point...those guys may be very good (or not)...but definitely overrated here (like most prospects are overvalued by their fan base)

It's almost like you've forgotten the past six years.

Kane >>> Robertson for where the team is right now.

I'm not saying I wouldn't trade Robertson for Kane, absolutely I would. Or even Robertson and a 1st.

But I wouldn't want to trade Robertson, Knies, and a 1st for him. Hardly think this is unreasonable.

I'm mixed on Robertson. His AHL and junior stats line up with some very very good 1st line NHLers. But he's been so bad in the NHL that I think, if anything, he has been underrated here (including by myself).

As for Knies.. Yeah he's probably gonna be nothing interesting. It comes down to what they think of Robertson and his probabilities of being a 1st line+ guy. Because trading him for 1 year of a dude could absolutely shorten your window. I personally do it, but I don't really have a great grasp on how good Robertson is/will be. So it's not an easy decision for me if I'm including him + a B prospect or 2 + picks.

eh I have to disagree.

Robertson gets constantly shit on here. His age adjusted numbers are mostly ignored and the focus is on his poor performance in his limited NHL stints.

Knies I think is overrated by the old boys club. I think most folks on here are pretty skeptical and think he is generally overrated given his consistent lack of production. Maybe I'm biased cause I don't think a ton of him as a prospect.

I don't think it will take that. If anything replace Knies with Sandlin and you're probably closer.
