TML? More like FML, amirite? Yet Another Off Season Thread

But what team that would be interested in Kane has two prospects like that they'd be willing to move? The Leafs, Flames and Oilers I think are the only legit contenders with multiple top 50 prospects on that list ME posted.

Its not like all of the other 8 teams have great systems with multiple top prospects. Bruins, Lightning, Avs, Canes, Rangers all kinda have nothing in the system.

Let's do the Hossa trade in 09.

Hossa and Dupuis
FOR
Colby Armstrong, Erik Christensen and Angelo Esposito and a first-round draft pick.

Zeke did this exercise when I argued with him about it.. He changed my mind. Don't tell him I said that he's right about rentals not costing much tho.

two prospects that were first round picks and a prospect that was a 3rd rounder...plus a real first round pick

sounds a lot like my package

I was looking at comps and its impossible to say. Most elite, veteran rentals are traded for packages like that, but then also some team blows their load for Matt Duchene or Seth Jones for some reason. So who knows.

Best guess is a top prospect, a 1st and maybe some depth pieces/picks. Thats likely what most offers would be.

But some team could do something crazy. It only takes one.

Something else to consider is that our depth pieces actually have some value. Assume for salary matching purposes it's Kerfoot & Holl. My distaste for both is known but that's still an prime winger coming off of a 51 point season being paid 750K in cash this season. Holl is at worst a #4-5 type RHD who is solid enough on the PK. These aren't castaway bad contracts.

Armstrong was a 26 year old that put up a 36 point pace in a very high scoring era. But sure, 1st round pick 7 years prior to that I guess.

Christiensen was a 25 year old putting up a 33 point pace in the same era.

Esposito was a B prospect who was putting up pretty shit numbers in junior at the time.

I respectfully disagree that it sounds a lot like your package. No Robertson there.

a lot of these packages look uninspiring thru today's lens because most prospects do not meet expectations
The players in the Hossa trade weren't prospects. They were 25 and 26 year olds. Esposito was the only prospect and he was a B type at best.

Considering Davidson made Hughes go out and get a top 15 pick for Dach, I don't think he will let Kane go cheaply. He may actually get more at deadline and Dubas may prefer that anyway.

I don't see why he'd prefer that. Kane only has the 1 year left.

Esposito was actually the top junior prospect at one point

This is where looking at the prospects at the time can illuminate though. Esposito was a former 1st rounder coming off of a 13 point in 57 game "effort" in the AHL as a 21 yr old. That should have looked uninspiring at the time, not because of anything to do with prospects being a mystery box.

When he was 16. This is really a stretch mate.

Calling a 21 yr old coming off of a 13 point AHL season a "B" prospect is super duper fucking kind.
Trade was in 2008 so technically he was still in the Q putting up 1.23ppg in his D+1 year. It wasn't great by any stretch but I could buy "B" prospect if you wanna stretch it. There's still no Robertson in the trade though.

I'm not here to argue about the past all that much...2007 deadline values don't really impress me

late first round picks seem to have tumbled in value since then ie.. Dubas gave up a first and two fourths for a broken down Nick two years ago.

Knies numbers aren't great

Robertson has the numbers but can't stay on the ice

so I don't see the lavishness you are seeing

I fought the CH1 battle with zeke before. Mind was changed; he showed me, I dug deep for more examples and came up empty. You rarely, if ever, see 2 1sts+ a B prospect/stuff go for any rental throughout NHL history. Only way it makes sense is if you value Robertson as a 2nd rounder as opposed to mid-1st. Not quite sure I do though.

Kane is a different level of elite and maybe 2022/2023 is a different story and prices reach new heights, but I'm gonna bet against it till I see it.

I wouldn't either if I was willing to compare prospects to former prospects who were putting up significantly lesser performances.

yet you still stubbornly cling to dated arguments about value
