TML? More like FML, amirite? Yet Another Off Season Thread

what is there to back up this idea that edmonton is a more responsible defensive team than toronto exactly?

Literally nothing

Toronto gives up fewer shot attempts, shots, expected goals, scoring chances, high danger chances both 5v5 & PK

5v5 it's relatively close, but PK...Jack is in for a rude awakening. Edmonton gives up 24 more shot attempts per 60, 11 more shots per 60, 2 full expected goals per 60, 18 more scoring chances, 7 more HD chances....it's night and day. An elite PK vs a well below average one.

"Sure he has an .899 and gives up 4 goals a game, but he doesn't give up the 5th."

That narrative got one of their goalies to the HOF.

Fuhr finished in the top 5 in sv% once in his career (rookie season) and the year he won his Vezina he finished 19th in sv% (Roy finished 1st fwiw and got humped out of that Vezina)

Easy to understand why anyone watching the Mike Smith show last year would think they'd be way better with Jack though.

That guy was literally just missing the red nose and clown shoe shaped skates.

That's the funny bit about perception though...Mike Smith finished the season with a .915 on better shot quality than Jack did on his .914

And that's before we ignore that Jack might have turned into a pumpkin post all star break.

Tyson Barrie and Cody Ceci (both older and declined from their Leafer days) will be on the ice approximately 2/3 of the game in front of Soupy. Let that alone sink in...

It’s too bad. I really like Jack and would like to cheer for him to have personal success.

But because it’s Edmonton, I kinda want him to be an epic flop to the same degree Toskala & Raycroft were after leaving Toronto.

Either way, at least he got paid.

If Campbell plays like he did for most of his time in Toronto, which he probably will because we're the Leafs, it'll be a huge upgrade for them and hide a lot of the issues.

If he plays like he did for most of this year, they're fucked.

Nurse-Ceci
Kulak-Bouchard
Murray-Barrie

That's a bottom 5 blueline. That's not hyperbole. St Louis & Philly both finished bottom 5 in xGA. Would you take that blueline over Provorov-Ellis-Sandheim-Risto-Braun-XXXXXX?

Maybe, but it's a pretty good discussion with arguments for and against both sides. That was the 28th ranked defensive unit in hockey last year.

Mike Smith Edmonton career: .913
Jack Campbell Toronto career: .916

With Jack playing in front of a very good defensive team to get there and Mike Smith playing in front of a tire fire. I don't buy Jack being a big upgrade there.

I was talking about .920+ Jack, but then I looked at his numbers and that was maybe 30 games over 3 years. Man that guy didn't do much to get paid.

Yep. It's really easy to get the impression that Jack was a stud here. He gave us average plus goaltending that was deeply inconsistent. He was Raycroftesque in the 2nd half last season, for the entire 2nd half. Can't overlook that shit man. .880-.890 is a slump until it's not, then it's a trend.

Spector is basically their Howard Berger or Steve Simmons though, tbf. it's not like Oil fans listen to/respect him.

Not exactly. Same level of hackery as those two, yes, with the distinction that Berger and Simmons have always hated the Leafs and their fans with the fiery intensity of a thousand suns.

Whereas Spector is just about the biggest Oilers homer you could possibly imagine. In comparison, Joe Bowen is impartial where the Leafs are concerned.

I have little doubt Jack will be really good for them this year. Rule of the ex leafs. It won’t be enough though and I don’t believe the 4 years after will be that pretty.

Is there actually an ex Leaf rule though?

Since 2010, here's the guys we decided to let go of or ran out of town.

Kulemin: Bounced back maybe a bit in NYI but same guy as Toronto
Versteeg: same guy
Bozak: won a chip, but was the same guy
MacArthur: Rule of the Ex Leaf until conkied
Grabo: Toast
Gigeure: Rule of the Ex Leaf
Beauchemin: Just for LoF, definitely a rule of the ex leaf
Reimer: same guy
Dion: junk
Phil: was a remained a stud
Gardiner: broken
Liles: broken
Franson: junk
JVR: same guy
Bolland: toast
Clarkson: toast
Bernier: same guy
Uncle Leo: toast
Grabner: only a Leaf for one year but went from junk to near 30 goal scorer...so okay
Freddy: found weight loss jesus, so okay
Zaitsev: junk
Hyman: same guy
Brown: same guy but 20 minutes a game
Kapanen: same guy
Johnsson: junk
Kadri: I miss this man
Marleau: junk
Hainsey: junk
Barrie: put up a bunch of PP points, but still junk
Ceci: junk

The only guys that we should have wanted back/kept (at their post Leaf contracts) were Phil, Giguere maybe, Beauch (lol, fuck you lof), Reimer probably, Slim Freddy (highly questionable if this would have happened here), & Kadri

Everyone else, we got out when the getting was good.
