TML? More like FML, amirite? Yet Another Off Season Thread

Good post but Dubas will have no problem finding another gig

no doubt. but if he leaves it will be because we lost 7 1st rounds in a row. I could care less who else leaves other than Auston Matthews at that point. if the team wins 1 or 2 rounds, they all get 10 year extensions. literally any other outcome besides losing the first round again, Dubas is getting a new contract from the Leafs. the bar is that low in Toronto now.

Hypothetical, hes fired tomorrow. Who or what type of GM would you prefer be his replacement?

Looking to go back to the recycling bin or off the board?

I'm not married to needing an old boys club guy again at GM specifically.

but next time we should conduct a proper hiring search for all positions.

and we don't hire first timers in all 3 positions at once. that would be requirement #2.

Thirdly, the basic reason for the Toronto Maple Leafs drought is that they can't draft for beans. Two of the only 4 100 point type players in the team's entire history are in the lineup right now! I would look for people who want to make it the Leafs mission to be the best scouting and drafting org in hockey. If you start from there, longterm success will follow. You want something new to try? Try that for a change.

What is the fear of moving off Dubas on this board? That we might get a GM that might not be as analytically inclined? Are we seriously that concerned that we can’t possibly accept the best of both worlds where we have someone that leans on analytics while also having a good eye for hockey?

Dubas tenure as GM has been underwhelming to say the least. Teams with dinosaurs for GMs have had significantly more recent success than we have. His Amateur evaluations haven’t led to much yet. His pro evaluations have led to some really shit deals(Kadri deal, Ritchie contract, Lyubushkin, Mrazek).

He’s definitely getting to that “relieve of duties” stage.

Ok. Come on.

If he was GM/Coach I could see it but the man built a 115 pt team and had a coach that made no, or very little, in-game adjustments in the playoffs and really did get owned by Cooper, even with home ice.

I just can't see them firing Dubas before Keefe. I'm really surprised they're still going to roll with Keefe tbh.

My one critique with Dubas is exactly what Leafin' WANTS out of the next GM. I think he's trying too hard to balance the analytics bit with the "hockey guy" bit. Many of his deals and decisions have gone contrary to analytics and those end up being his worst mistakes.

I think there’s enough to criticize Dubas for but IMO, early on a lot of his draft picks. We’re still in the timeframe where the Lou’s picks should really be ready but we had two putrid drafts with him in charge.

I’m pissed about the recurring first round nightmare too, but you’re acting like we finished below the Habs.

Our weakness isn’t in the team that Dubie assembled. It’s ironically in the weakness of the best players on the team who also happen to be some of the best players in the league. If they just find a way to get the core 4 to produce as they do in just about every game of every year other than game 6 and 7 of the first round, this is a dynasty.

Dubie or the next GM can hire whoever they want, roll the dice on a new supporting cast, but it’ll all come back to the same question. Will Matty and Marner find that extra gear in elimination games? It’s as simple and as frustrating as that.

So as I mentioned, I defriended Frenemy from FB because he wouldn’t stop with the harassment all day long. You’d think that would be a wake up call, that maybe one went too far and should maybe either give some time to cool off or apologize and just put a lid on it for awhile? No, not Frenemy. He just sends you a message the next day on IG instead:
Great leadership shown yesterday. Everything is fine and great job of management covering up for each others failures.
Is anyone accountable in Toronto.
O’reilly gets it done
Bergeron
Gudreau
Mcdavid
Etc. etc.

Big 6 in Toronto. Nope…just need some more time.
Enjoy the wait

Yes, we have legitimate fears of going back to the old boys network that produces JFJ's and then Burke's to fix the problems the JFJ's create, only to make it worse because they lack the patience to build the club our properly.

That's a reasonable as fuck concern, given what we've lived through the last 20 yrs and all.

I would trade Dubas for a guy like Tulsky who is even more into analytics and less into the woo woo leadership/philosophy stuff.

Yeah, my opinion is that Dubas blinked at the first sign of adversity for his previously described team build and let the voices around him push him off course into gud pro land, which has led to depth actually not being our strength anymore.

But there's no denying 115 points. The playoffs are still a different animal. Cheat more. They all do it.
