TML? More like FML, amirite? Yet Another Off Season Thread

Ah so lebrun says they're asking for $3.5m, which makes perfect sense.

Whoever was floating that silly $5m rumor was doing their usual leafs trolling.

But yeah - the decision is basically between keeping mikky or kerf. I'm not sure which is more valuable given that kerf can play C. Then again we could also get something in a trade for kerf too.

Can Kerf really play C though? He was given sweetheart usage as our 3C and kind of sucked there.

If you’re not planning on keeping guys past the last year of their deal, and they’re not your core guys, it’s best to trade them for something and replace them internally or with UFAs. Kerf is gone after next year so may as well turn him into something and get Mikky on the same deal for 3-4 years. You could always scoop Kerf back up as a ufa most likely anyway.

If Mik is asking for 3.5 I wonder if leafs could do a 3x3 deal. Would be pretty good value because he is a pretty banging third liner. But... I don't know. He's a bit of a dummy that misses a lot of important assignments when the games get tight. And again, if you remove empty net goals he has 0 goals 2 assists in 19 playoff games. He's been part of the problem offensively in the last three playoffs.

3x3 feels like a deal tho so idk. I think I'd like it just fine if there isn't a NTC attached. It would be a very easily tradeable contract and if the young guys step up and prove their worth you can let him go for decent assets.

I like Mikheyev, but he’s the exact kind of player this team needs to move on from the moment he wants to be paid real money.

And we’re at least 12 months overdue when it comes to moving on from Kerf. Again, not a bad player. But a team with our cap structure paying a smallish, OK-ish winger $3.5M is idiotic.

As always it's gonna have to completely depend on what they do with the extra money. If they go out and just sign another UFA for the same money the odds of him being as good or useful as Mik aren't great IMO.

As for Kerf.. Yeah, you get rid of him all day every day. No brainer there. Avs aren't dumb for realizing how expendable he was.

There are going to be a ton of mid tier bargains for patient contenders.

I think they will look at what the leafs did against Tampa and will come forward and present themselves to us to give them their best shot to get a cup. Don’t see anything changing next year that heavy favourites are avs, Tampa and leafs. So they will want to get in while there is still available cap space on those three teams. Yes it can be another team - but those should be the odds on favourites.

It's more of a matter of who has what to spend?

Once the obvious names go and the wells dry a bit I think players that are frozen out will take 1 year deals on good orgs with exposure

It was the Hawks bread and butter once upon a time

I think we're going to see an interesting trade market this summer. A lot of good teams have to feel like they're not complete but aren't in a cap position to make significant additions through free agency and then there's a lot of mediocre to bad teams that are locked into their cores as well and don't have a ton of wiggle room.

- wtf is Boston going to do? Can't see them sitting on their hands, regardless of the injuries. Pastrnak allegedly in play. Have to assume the DeBrusk saga is finally addressed. They've gotta at least shuffle some deck chairs, no?

- Florida wants to move Bobrovsky but we all know they can't. Hubie going into the last season of a sweetheart team friendly deal, he's going to want Marner money. Only way for them to make significant moves is to try to fleece someone who values their goofy depth.

- Philly sucks but is capped out and most of their contracts are tough to move. To take their annual bad swing at the UFA market they're either going to have to move Konecny (who allegedly they've tried to move with little interest) or Sandheim, who is going into the last year of his RFA deal.

- Edmonton is capped out, is desperate to appease Connor, and if they more or less stand pat, will return a roster not as good as the one that just got mauled by the Avs.

- We're cap fucked and appear to still need things to reach the next level. Our saving grace here is that we can clear cap fairly easily and the players we would/could easily move away from were part of the problem.

- Wtf does Washington do? Old, locked in, no goaltending. They're the most likely bet to overpay for UFA goaltending and cut from elsewhere, but their blueline is pretty grim too.

Also....Pittsburgh is fucking fascinating. Malkin & Letang are UFA's....if they take old balls team friendly deals, I could see them taking a big swing at free agency. 23 million in cap space with Malkin, Letang, Rodrigues, Rakell & DeSmith as their UFA's of note. Only really Kapanen in need of an RFA contract but I wouldn't be shocked if they just trade him to save the money.

Expect Phil Myers to be shipped to a cap fucked team. Team that buys him out will get a cap credit for next year of 616k. And then a charge of 633k the year after. But if that 616k is needed by one of the cap fucked teams I can see it being utilized. Leafs did that with Cowen a few years back.
