TML? More like FML, amirite? Yet Another Off Season Thread

It's the kind of big dick move that would be great to see Kyle make to get them over the hump. Just better not be too expensive to do because shortening the window is a no-no for me too.

Fitting Kane under the cap wouldn’t be any issue. He’s only got this year left on his deal at $10.5M. And at 50% retained he’d be $5.25M.

Moving out Kerfoot & Holl alone would clear more than that much space. And there’s always the possibility of double retention.

The only question would be acquisition cost.

Teams ready to win usually pay the price to do so. Kane would be a ridiculous add. You have enough in the pipeline to give up to win.

If you win a cup the rest doesn't matter.

yeah. sure it'll cost assets but honestly you have to do it in this situation. The Leafs have their two best skaters of the modern era in the lineup and entering their prime. The time for an over the top move is now. And that's not even counting the 6 first round losses in a row. Or that it's Dubas' last contracted year. Or that Shanahan has been here for close to a decade. etc.

Not cheap. Only thing brining it down is if Kane uses his NMC and says Leafs or pound sand

I am all in price pending but I have not seen one reputable source talk about it. It appears to have started from a random Leafs updates twitter account

I’d be pretty surprised if he did invoke his NMC.

You have to figure he’s ready to move on from the Hawks since he’s still an elite player and they’re settling in for a very long rebuild.

And there are worse places for him to spend his last year before UFA than on the same team (and maybe same line) as Auston Matthews.

Also, it's only one year. So really, we're into "pending UFA at the deadline" with a sweetener added on top.

So something along the lines of Knies/Robertson + 1st + Salary (Kerfoot & Holl). Wouldn't be surprised to see Sandin somewhere in that mix as well, given the current contract situation.

My hope is the NMC and letting him be happy after what he’s done for the organization to keep the cost low so it doesn’t impact our team too much.

also, double retention is possible so coukd keep Holl as our depth guy etc

Who cares about cost? Adding another Marner is a no brainer, even it its just one year.

What do we have in the system that would be a deal breaker? Maybe Robertson. Thats it.

I’d drive Robertson to the airport myself to acquire Kane if I wasn’t worried that Nicky Robbie would trip and break his leg getting out of my car.

Well that's the point that folks are getting across I think. There are dealbreakers. Like any trade, cost has to make sense and you can't sacrifice your roster or shorten the window to acquire the guy. I think I'd do Robertson tho.

Yeah, but what are the dealbreakers for Kane? Almost any conceivable, reasonable cost is worth it. We have given up 1sts for Foligno and to dump Marleau/Mrazek. Kane is one of the best players in the league.

Unless they want Nylander, or something stupid.
