Preds re-sign Mikael Granlund, 1 year, $3.75 million. That’s quite a haircut from his last contract, he made $6.5 million actual. As noted elsewhere, they also signed Erik Haula, 1 year, $1.75 million.

Poille continues to build a roster made up of nothing but middle six forwards.

Yeah, there is a huge gulf between their top end guys and the rest.

Lightning re-sign Anthony Cirelli to a 3 year/$14.4 million contract. That puts them at $93.2 million, they’ll be allowed to go to $91 million with Kucherov on LTIR. So they still have some trimming to do.

Ducks re-sign Ryan Miller, 1 year, $1 million.

I don't think I saw a definitive link, but the NHL apparently thinks they have things worked out for the Canada teams:

Ilya Kovalchuk is headed back to the KHL, signing a 2 year contract with Avangard Omsk. He played for St. Petersburg in his last stint there, from 2013-18.

Arizona solved their cap problem by trading Derek Stepan to Ottawa for a 2021 2nd rounder. That brings the ‘Yotes down to $78.5 million. He has 1 year left on a 6 year/$39 million ($6.5 million AAV) contract signed with the Rangers. With his $3 million bonus already paid, his actual for this year is only $2 million.

Scott Darling will attend the Panthers camp on a PTO. After being traded to Florida and bought out, he played last season with Innsbruck in the Austrian League.

Where he turned in a less-than-stellar 89.8% save percentage...

Which was best on a team that allowed the 2nd most goals in the league. His backup was at .879, two other goalies who played a total of 6 games were below .800.

Ottawa does another deal to bail another team out of their cap problem. The Sens send Marian Gaborik and Anders Nilsson, both of whom will end up on LTIR, to Tampa for Cedric Paquette, Braydon Coburn and a 2022 2nd rounder. Paquette has 1 year left at $1.65 million cap and actual, Coburn has 1 year left at $1.7 million cap, $1.6 million actual. He waived his NTC. Tampa has 20 players under contract with a $80.3 million cap hit and 3 players who will be on LTIR for $16.375 million. Gaborik and Nilsson only have 1 year left, but they still have a next year problem with 16 players under contract and a cap hit north of $85 million, when Kucherov is factored back in.

UFA Mike Hoffman is headed to the Blues on a PTO. LeBrun says there will be a 1 year contract once the Blues can use LTIR for Tarasenko and Steen.

After losing Lundqvist, the Caps will bring 39 year old Craig Anderson to camp on a PTO. He was 11-17-2 with a 3.25 GAA and .902 save % with the Sens last year.

This INFURIATES me ... although most of you don't seem to care and are probably sick of me banging on about it.

It is infuriating. The easy solution is to wipe contracts off the books for players who retire, except for 35+ contracts. How many times did Nathan Horton, David Clarkson or Marian Hossa get traded for cap compliance purposes? Hossa hasn’t played since 2017 but Arizona still has him on their books for this season, which will finally be the last of the 10 year contract he signed in 2009. Horton is finally off the books but hasn’t played since the 2013-14 season.

Jeremy Rutherford, who covers the Blues for The Athletic has a good article on the Hoffman PTO and the LTIR ramifications. They still have Vince Dunn to sign and Tarasenko may be back at some point during the season.

Habs sign Corey Perry, 1 year, $750k. No bonuses noted, unlike last year’s contract with Dallas, which had $1.75 million in performance bonuses.

Simple solution is to disallow the trading of contracts for inactive players. So simple, you'd think even the morons in the NHL offices would see it as a reasonable solution ... but I'm not sure they even recognize the problem.

Henrik Lundqvist will have open heart surgery for an aortic valve replacement and other work on the aorta.

"Last three weeks my focus has shifted from training camp and the upcoming season to my health and what I can and can't do," the Washington Capitals goalie posted on his personal Twitter account. "Scheduled for an open-heart surgery now -- aortic valve replacement, aortic root and ascending aortic replacement to be more exact.
