OK, so ... looking at the Caps blueline group for the first time in a while and I can see what they're thinking. First off, this feels very much like a last hurrah for this roster. Ovi needs a new deal after this year, Backstrom and Oshie are pushing the red line age-wise and they have 6 other guys 30 or over. The time, as they say, is now. And that being the case, the time was now to go find somebody on the left side on D. Until they signed Chara, their best left sider was freaking Brenden Dillon ... who sucks. Carlson, Orlov, Schultz and Jensen are all right shots, which is weird given that the rest of the freaking league can't seem to find quality RDs at the moment. Chara makes all kinds of sense for them ... TVR, none at all. I have no idea why they signed that guy to be their 5th RD. Or why he took them up on it.

Chara is on the decline, but he's one of the savviest guys in the league ... so his decline doesn't look as ugly as it might otherwise. He's still average at worst across the board, and for $800K ... not bad. Figure it's a million with bonuses at worst. Fine. He's probably worth twice that much.

The thought of Chara getting 8 regular season opportunities to exchange pleasantries with Brad Marchand is pretty exciting to me.

Don't pull any punches Chara! Sincerely, every fan in the NHL who is not a Bruins fan.

Contrast the age of the forwards with the youth of their goalies. If they don’t sign Anderson, they have 23 year old Samsonov and 24 year old Vanecek. Copley is the oldster at 28 but he seems destined for the taxi squad.

Yeah, same. I'm betting Marchand makes an attempt to tamp down the crazy out of respect for Chara, but eventually it'll explode out of him in what I'm hoping will be an entertaining explosion of stupidity.

Yeah. I didn't say their last hurrah would be successful and chances are very, very good that the goaltending will ultimately be their downfall. That or general age/wear and tear.

Yeah ... there's a lot of noise on the internet from fans trying to push the NHL to remove regional blackouts on the Center Ice packages. That would allow for greater access and more flexibility, especially in markets that aren't likely to have any in-person attendance at any point soon. Sadly, I think those regional restrictions are part of the rights fees negotiated with the region rights holders like Sinclair ... so ... not likely to happen.

It'll suck to have to switch streaming TV providers just to get hockey, but I'll do it if I have to. I'm just not doing it until the absolute last minute.
Hulu does not have Fox Sports Regionals any more. As far as I can tell, the only stand-alone streaming service that offers it is AT&T TV Now, in their $80 package. As far as old school cable packages, Spectrum and AT&T have the Fox RSNs. Not sure about satellite. Not an option for me.

I’d gladly get the NHL package if the Canes weren’t blacked out.

if anyone knows of a better stand-alone streaming package, please post.

my son was in Utah and he watched the Canes on bootleg websites found on reddit. If you go that route make sure your virus checker is good and up to date. He was too cheap to buy the NHL package

Well, at least I can get a cut rate on the AT&T service if I have to, but I understand it SUCKS. Hopefully something will change before there are actual games.

Jackets re-sign RFA forward Pierre-Luc Dubois 2 years/$10 million. He came off his entry deal and was not eligible for arbitration. Dundon is going to have to open his wallet to pay Svech.

I mean, we knew that (re: Svech). As for Dubois ... kudos to his agent for successfully stirring the pot in a timely manner and getting his guy a deal before camp opened. What did it take after there were suddenly a bunch of media reports about him holding out and shopping around for other interested parties? 24 hours? 48, tops.

Sami Vatanen is still looking for a landing spot. Surprised its taken so long for him to get signed, but this late in the game all he is going to find is a 1 year deal and probably for no more than $2 million (if he is lucky).

He’s a right shot, a rare commodity and he won’t be 30 until June. But he’s never played more than 72 games in a season and only played 50 and 47 in the last 2.

amazed no penguins or rangers in the outdoor games. Or even a big market team like LA or Ducks. I assume the Canes were not asked.

Can't really blame them. With no fans at all, you have no revenues coming in from fans and likely lose all of the advertising revenues at the arena. Its just a giant expense.

My only question would be 'what happens to the players and their paychecks? Are they getting their AHL salary prorated? Do they still get paid if the team they are supposed to be on just doesn't play at all?
