OK, so ... looking at the Caps blueline group for the first time in a while and I can see what they're thinking. First off, this feels very much like a last hurrah for this roster. Ovi needs a new deal after this year, Backstrom and Oshie are pushing the red line age-wise and they have 6 other guys 30 or over. The time, as they say, is now. And that being the case, the time was now to go find somebody on the left side on D. Until they signed Chara, their best left sider was freaking Brenden Dillon ... who sucks. Carlson, Orlov, Schultz and Jensen are all right shots, which is weird given that the rest of the freaking league can't seem to find quality RDs at the moment. Chara makes all kinds of sense for them ... TVR, none at all. I have no idea why they signed that guy to be their 5th RD. Or why he took them up on it.
Chara is on the decline, but he's one of the savviest guys in the league ... so his decline doesn't look as ugly as it might otherwise. He's still average at worst across the board, and for $800K ... not bad. Figure it's a million with bonuses at worst. Fine. He's probably worth twice that much.
