Good business with PK and banking a little bit more cap space. He is waiver exempt and gets paid the same no matter what. Canes drop his cap hit to $850k for this period of time he is assigned to Chicago on paper.

Your life is far more important than hockey, you have to wonder with the seriousness of the condition if the risk is worth the reward for a guy that has made countless millions already in his career. Scary stuff if any complications arise.
 
Yeah, I'm not counting on ANY of that. If Freddie manages to play again, good on him ... but nobody should for one second risk his long term health to get back out there. If nothing else, DVT makes it exceptionally difficult to travel by air, even under treatment.

One of my beer league teammates and good friends had a pulmonary embolism last summer. He's in his late 50s and in otherwise good health, and one night he came back to the bench from his first shift in a game struggling to breathe. A few minutes later he gave another shift a try, but couldn't play further.

Fortunately he went to the hospital a few days later, after extensive prodding from me, from our other teammates, and from his girlfriend. Thank goodness he came to his senses and sought treatment, because the doctors discovered the embolism and immediately performed a pulmonary thromboendartectomy, which saved his life.

Seven months later he feels great and is hopefully about ready to get back on the ice. He was prohibited from doing so by his doctors because he has been on blood thinners, which don't go well with contact sports. His cardiologist has signed off on dropping the blood thinners; if his hematologist does the same this week, he'll be cleared to play again.
 
It all depends on the reason for the DVT - assuming it was related to an injury or similar, there isn't a lot of reason to worry about another one going forward if Freddie follows his doc's advice.
 
The key, as Kurtz noted in his post, is when he’s off anti-coagulants. That was the hold up with Stamkos, he had to wait until they cleared his system
 
I lost a friend to pulmonary embolism a about 15 years ago. He was a Vietnam vet who enlisted as a forward observer. His life expectancy was supposed to be months. He ended up doing 3 tours and sent all of his pay home. He was absolutely fearless and an absolute badass. He bought almost 1,000 acres of land to build his dream house on. He later became the S.W. Virginia distributor for Aheuser Busch and Coca Cola products. You couldn't tell he was wealthy, just a solid, down to earth guy. His Va. doctors had no clue what was wrong with him. Through a doctor friend of mine at Duke, I helped get him lined up to see a specialist there the next Thursday. He died on Tuesday. It goes to show, it doesn't matter who you are or how much money you've got.

Bruce Garrioch tweeted that the Canes had 2 scouts in Detroit tonight for their game against the Sens. The Panthers, Rangers and Vegas did too, while 14 other teams had 1 scout.
 
Buzzards starting to circle Ottawa? A lot of their better players have a lot of term left on their deals except for Vlad Tarasenko who is a pending UFA and who has a full no trade he can wield to control where he goes and Jeff Chychrun who has one more year left and a 10-team no trade list.

Detroit would want to make hockey trades. I don't expect Yzerman is going to make a big trade involving young assets and picks with his team on the bubble but they probably would want to make a few tweaks to try to improve their playoff chances.

Trade deadline is 5 weeks away and the Canucks took a big piece off the trade market.

Looks like Sean Monahan is the best center still available? He’s on a 1 year/$2 million contract. The Flyers being in contention likely takes Konecny off the market.

Adam Henrique is another intriguing rental option at center. He's a pending UFA nearing the end of a five-year deal with a $5.825 AAV and a modified no-trade clause.
 
It would be interesting to know what Canes management sees as our priorities they might want to address via a trade. Big in season trades have not been a thing even with the more active Dundon/Waddell regime.

For my money, we could use:

* A playable #7 dman (but we are not in a situation where we would likely trade for a top 6 and slide someone down into that #7 role)

* A goalie we can trust (I highly doubt we are trading for a goalie and will try to roll with what we have)

* A good 2nd line center (sorry KK, you are not getting it done).

If you want to throw out needing another goal scorer I wouldn't argue with that, but unless you are removing one of our top 9 in a trade, I don't see how adding another winger who can score would move the needle very much.

This appears to be the forward pecking order now when all are healthy:

Svech-Aho-Turbo
Noesen-Drury-Necas
Martinook-Staal-Jarvis
Bunting-KK-Fast

(move forwards around as you see fit). Where would we place someone like, say, Tarasenko into that lineup?

I expect the Canes to dabble in the trade market for that #7 Dman, but I'm not really expecting us to do anything else.
 
Frankly, if Carolina's not in the goalie market then I could see them making a move for a secondary offensive center and maybe a more utilitarian 7th D. Maybe they look at a winger, but I doubt it, unless they are trying to get a Top 6 winger AND a center. But they don't have that kind of cap room banked unless they LTIR Freddie ... which is a whole other conversation.

Remember, Taransenko has passed on Carolina as an option twice before. I don't see that working out, even if the Canes wanted to shore up the wing. Jack has been good, but an upgrade there would potentially be impactful. He can play anywhere on a forward line, so it's not like you have to bench the kid again. Likewise, Noesen has been good, but it's not like you can't imagine an upgrade there either. Fit would be an issue, of course.
 
I think Monohan/ Henrique would be two of the top targets, with "targets" on GMDW's scale just means he may call and ask how much.

I think he'll "we like our group" again and make me lose what little hair I have left
