2023-24 Canes Misc Thread

I was reading the writeup on Don Waddell fan 'Q&A' from last week. He claims that there is substantial interest in our prospects that we are looking to assign to AHL teams.

"We probably have four or five players committed that teams absolutely wanted. We'll see what happens over the next couple of weeks with who makes our team and who doesn't and then we'll go from there."

The thing is, is Pyotr one of those players? Most NHL teams would want their #3 goalie getting the bulk of the playing time so he is sharp. At best Pyotr is going to make like 30-35 AHL starts in another org's AHL team. That is much better than him being part of an NHL 3 goalie rotation in my opinion, but I really don't know exactly what the Canes have in mind here.

I expect Pyotr to play NHL games this season, there is little doubt that happens at some level. But I don't want him sitting around for weeks in between NHL starts and I don't want us to try to split the nets 3 ways if everyone is healthy (how would that even work, Freddie 35, Raanta 25, Pyotr 22?)

Svech is still in yellow at practice. He might not be ready for opening night, I can’t imagine him playing next week without a pre-season game under his belt and there is only the home and home with Nashville on Thursday and Friday.

One of the other drawbacks to not having an AHL team…where do you send guys to rehab? Now, I’m sure that man AHL teams would be thrilled to have a player of his caliber in their lineup, even for a few games. And maybe Chicago ends up being a spot for him. But do players on rehab assignments count toward the veteran rule? Svech qualifies, he’s played 347 regular season games.

The biggest issue would seem to be the cap economics of keeping a three goalie rotation. Pyotr I believe is now being paid upwards of $2 million plus this season, that's a ton of cap money being wasted when every dollar counts, so I cannot see the Canes carrying three healthy guys all at once. Mystery injury for a tweak here and there for Uncle Antti or Freddy to make the cap stuff work maybe...but just cannot afford to keep all three up at once if healthy.

Barring an injury to one of the vets, the simplest solution to getting Kochetkov games is gonna be loaning him out to an AHL team. He's still exempt from waivers, so that shouldn't be any kind of hangup while on the other hand there's no end of complications should they attempt to keep him in Raleigh and carry 3 goalies. 90% of the time, it's going to end up being the easiest path that ends up getting taken. I'm sure we can all spin up 20 questions about how it would work, but until the Canes settle on a specific path for him it's kind of whistling in the wind IMO. I guess it would be nice to know what's going to happen right now, but with more than a week before opening night, there's plenty of time to sort it out. It's not like he's a bum, so finding him a gig shouldn't be all that tough ... especially given how many dog-crap goaltenders there are on AHL rosters.

Kochetckov’s cap it is $2 million, but teams can bury up to $1.15 million in the minors, so the Canes would have to carry $850k of his cap hit when he’s in the minors.

I looked at the Chicago Wolves roster yesterday. Their goalies are Adam Scheel and Keith Kinkaid. Scheel hasn’t played a full AHL season yet, he split the last 2 between the AHL and ECHL. Kinkaid is under contract with the Devils but also has an AHL contract with the Wolves. Supposedly the arrangement is that if Kinkaid doesn’t make the Devils roster, he’ll be sent to Chicago instead of Utica. But, for a team dreaming of the big time, that’s pretty sketchy goaltending. So maybe that’s a landing spit for Koochie.

Did any full STMers who are going to tonight's session at the arena get an advance sneak peek at which players are assigned to which tables?

How was the session last night?
It was nuts. We got there at 4:30 for the 6 PM door opening and there were over 100 people in line ahead of us. We had prioritized KK and Svech autographs, and they were at the same table at the 100 level near the East side entrances. We got in that line immediately and waited in that single line the whole time and got autographs from KK and Svech at 7:50PM.

Not sure if they will have the same table pairings but if they do, if you want Svech and KK and don't have a fast queue for them, you better get to the arena at...3PM? 2PM? NOON? if you want to do anything else.

Last season we had Necas/Kase fast queue, we got there at 4:30, zipped up to the Jarvis/Noesen line, and had plenty of extra time to catch our fast queue and Skjei/de Haan who had no one in line for them.

Our missed fast queue last night? Skjei, Suzuki, Rees. No offense to them, but missing that fast queue for us wasn't a big deal.

Wow, an almost two hour wait once inside just for one table...that's nuts. My son and I were lucky enough a couple years back thanks to AndyT's generosity with his tickets to make it to three or four different tables and still participate in the tour and on ice stuff. It seems like everything now is a madhouse with the numbers.

The price of popularity I guess, and the event planning hasn't kept up with the demand.... or that's the best we're gonna get and tough noogies, I guess.

I RSVP'd but didn't go. You can thank me for 2 fewer people being in line somewhere.

This is why I don’t go anymore. When I worked in Oxford, getting there in time to get anything done would have meant blowing off half the afternoon. Even now, working at home, 20 minutes from the arena if all the lights are red, I couldn’t go yesterday, it was the first day of quarter end closing for the beancounter, and I put in a solid 13 hour day at my desk. Then watched the Giants puke all over the field.

Start times for 3 home games have been changed

12/23 v. Islanders now 7:30
1/6 v. Blues now 8:00
2/24 v. Stars now 8:00

All 3 games are preceded by a State basketball game, the first at 1, the others at 2.

Heck, I quit going to this kind of thing back when they were bad and hardly anybody was there. It sounds like the experience certainly hasn't improved in the meantime.

Svech was still in a yellow jersey at practice, meaning it’s more and more likely he’ll be in street clothes next Wednesday. The game day group will practice at Invisalign tomorrow and then head to Nashville and the others will practice after. Same schedule for the home game on Friday. If he’s not playing in a preseason game, there is no way his first game action will be an NHL regular season game.

The way you phrased that, he won't be back until postseason.

Did anyone note the Derrick Stepan retirement?
I don’t think so. I had noted the possibility/likelihood a while ago on the NHL thread when it was reported that he was shadowing Wild GM Bill Guerin.
