2024-25 Canes Miscellaneous Thread

OK, if Mikko wants to look later, then that tells me he's not gonna ever sign with the Canes. I don't think our team is strong enough to have a good playoff run with or without him, so we might as well try and get something in return by tomorrow.
Well yes, if it’s true he would agree to a sign and trade with other teams. The downside for the Canes is if those teams know this, why wouldn’t they wait til summer. Unless they need him for a playoff run in which case we’d be trading him at rental rates. Not sure why anyone would pay a premium to us to get him now.

Is it also possible the team he’s talking about is Colorado. Could that happen - him signed and traded back?

More and more feeling like GMET made a mistake on this.

Nope, I’m pretty sure NHL rules say a player cannot be traded back to the same team in the same season.

So he’d apparently agree to an extension with another team before the deadline just not here. Seems like that means the best value we get is a playoff run. Expensive freaking rental.

I really hope the Canes find a trade today for Rantanen. I understand that this situation was on the team's mind last night based on the postgame comments, but I don't think Rantanen's head has been in the game since he arrived. Even if Rantanen is not dealt and he knows he is staying in Carolina for the end of the season, I'm not sure he is going to shake out of things and suddenly become effective. He has looked completely disinterested out there quite a bit. I know the analytic numbers say he has been ok, but the eye test certainly doesn't.

We pretty much are assured that if Rantanen is dealt and it includes an 8 year contract extension, he will suddenly turn back into his superstar self. The Canes lineup might benefit from 'addition by subtraction' if they can move Rantanen.

Dry sad. He never meshed well during his short stay with us but hoped he would settle in and stay. The hockey world will relish in the Canes “inability” to get and keep star players, unfortunately.

Rants wont go back to those star numbers without Makar and Nate feeding him

Your better off cutting ties rather than getting screwed for 8 years at stupid money

This truly has been a huge distraction, the post game remarks from Rod and Aho among others you could see and hear the load they are dealing with...it needs to be put to bed. Mikko's head is not into it here, how is a guy like that supposed to be the big dog for a playoff run here now? Canes management is in a damned if they do damned if they don't scenario...bold trade great risk takers one minute then what the hell were you thinking next, can't win!

At some point Dumbdon has to have the details ironed out before you make a deal

I get the agents are squeezing the regimes nuts but this deal should have been hammered out

So what else would you be willing to move for Rantanen w/ a contract in place? Because it would have taken more than Necas/Drury.

Not being a jerk, honestly want to know what a deal for Rants w/ term looks like to folks.

Well it was Necas, Drury and 2nd and a 4th. If Rantanen was signed as part of the deal, change those draft picks to a 1st and maybe a 2nd tier prospect. It would have taken more, but not that much more I don't think. Necas is a pretty valuable trade chip.

The Canes are not going to get that return for a signed Rantanen from a contender now, which is part of the problem. The only way I see this working out for the Canes is a more involved 3 team deal where we do something like this:

Signed and retained Rantanen to Dallas for a 2026 and 2027 First round picks and Emil Hemming

Canes use those 2 first round picks to get 'someone' that we can plug into the lineup immediately

I'm sure Dallas wants to ship us someone like Logan Stankhoven as the centerpiece of a Rantanen trade. We don't need anymore small forwards please.

That's a great point to ponder...and sadly the NHL seems to be stuck in the old boy network ways and rules that say these types of big trades should only happen in the summer to get maximum value. The Canes doing things in unconventional ways seem to piss off the mainstream hockey media and to some extent the GM's too. The urgency now to get a sign and trade done up against the deadline appears to be the real challenge to maximize the return. If Rants was never going to sign here, then I think you have to look only through the lens of what a Necas & Drury and a pick is worth as fair value in the market...

Hypothetical of course, but Matthew Knies for Rants straight up is something I would do, power forward in power forward out, save the cap space!
I think a decent sized 2C center has to be the real need...if you have to trade Rants now at least go and get a real need for your team...picks and smallish prospects like Stankoven is not what you need...a real 2C would address a real need for this team.

It's going to be Dallas by all accounts...so what's the best case scenario for the Canes if we assume Dallas is not parting with anyone like Wyatt Johnston, Jason Robertson or Roope Hintz?

Logan Stankoven, Mavrik Bourque and a first rounder enough to make it not so bad?
