Around The League - 2024-25 Regular Season

Yeah, we’ll be shedding defence I assume. And young goalies seems to be as much a crap shoot as draftees. (Aside: why had no one stepped up for Askarov?)

We need forwards and picks (to flip for forwards.)

You have it the other way around, btw.

If the leagues actually cared about the quality of the product, the NHL wouldn't be the league that shouldn't be on the same footing as the others: It should be the NBA.

The overall NHL game has gotten incredibly better, despite the NHL's shitty rulesets. The NBA just sucks if you don't have one of the five or so best players on the team because you know for a fact that your team's not winning. It's not a coincidence that during his prime, LeBron's teams were a guarantee to make the finals. That would be inconceivable in any other league.
The NBA works the way it does largely because it's rigged. LeBron's teams tend to win because LeBron drives TV ratings. If a small market team is playing a big market team in a deciding playoff game, the small market team will have to win by 20 points just to win by 2 points. Why anyone bothers to wager on NBA games is a mystery to me. It's a total sham sport.

And there’s almost a zero sum kind of thing among the top 5 or 6 contenders. Not only do they deprive themselves of veteran depth (and it need not just be Monahan, it could be someone else), but one of the contenders likely gets that player.

Monahan would suit Boston perfectly, though maybe the Habs don’t trade him to a historic rival.
Why should the Habs care? Monahan will be retired by the time the Habs see another playoff game.

The honeymoon between Columbus & Jiricek seems to be over:

You know how this comes off to me? A lot like when The Charlatan was here. Old school, figure it out, kid! type of attitude towards prospects.

Columbus is a shithole and they've been healthy scratching their young players like Jiricek & Ken Johnson too often.

Yes, but even though Bergy is gone the same corporate culture remains. As far as the Habs are concerned, Jiricek is airing his dirty laundry in public. He's being "h'individualistic" and is not showing the type of humility expected from young players.

He'll never be a Hab.

I'm of the opinion that both things should happen.

Contract lengths need to be capped at a smaller length (ideally, 5 years) and true free agency needs to happen sooner.

Those two changes, by themselves, would drastically improve the league almost overnight once these 8 year deals that have been grandfathered in start expiring.

You cannot have a league rolling at maximal efficiency and capacity when teams are in metaphorical jails due to albatross contracts.
I just think you need better buy out rules

I think NHL simply needs to allow “franchise player” designation. Each team is allowed 1-player & that AAV doesn’t count vs cap. Pick a max number for that AAV say $18M for giggles
Franchise player is an option, but I’d just do a small tweak on the buyouts. Buy outs at 50% and teams can decide on how many years to spread it over, with a max of 2x the remaining contract years.
