Hockey Media & Business Thread

The Alberta equivalent, the AJHL is also going through some things lately. If US college players are going to be permitted to play in the CHL then leagues like the BCHL become kinda redundant.

They quit the AJHL to move to the BCHL I believe.
And then many players had to quit as BCHL is a rogue league outside of Hockey Canada. As a result, if you play BCHL, and get cut, you cannot play anywhere else in Canada for that season (and you cannot even ref in the league or else you cannot anywhere else). Rosters were filled with many 20 year olds who no longer cared or Americans who also didn't care if cut.

Excellent. Definitely prefer that to the 4 nations cup thingy
Yeah, Gord Miller's voice has replaced Santa Claus. I get hungry for a drumstick when I hear him anytime of the year.

A bit too much cheerleading, rah-rah from the crew, sometimes reminding me of the Leafs. That's why I don't mind losing all that much-other than to the U.S. and once upon a time, Russia. Still, it really has become part of Xmas in our house, even if only on in the background.

I couldn't care less either about the 4 Nations thing, or the current hype. Olympics, maybe. But international hockey is just not the same without the Russians. And international hockey (at least with the pro players) lost its shine for me somewhere in the nineties. I'll tune in to the 4 Nations perhaps.

well they should cheer for the home team.

I agree though Russia should be allowed back in.
Its too Leafy the way they do it. Maybe they should listen to a few of Gallivan's tapes-not a hint of bias. Never was big on this home town radio style bias made popular by the Bruins and Rangers announcers back on the big radio when I was a kid.

All these stupid tournaments need to go. How many stupid draft day decisions can be traced back to a player having an outsranding but completely outlier WJC performance?

That's stupid scouting. I agree with you on most of the tournaments, but of them all I prefer the juniors. Maybe because of the time of year and the raw emotion of the kids. The fast, mistake-filled game that's junior hockey is entertaining in its own way.

no one says you have to watch, I don't. I prefer the Spengler.

As an aside, your Montreal Victoire open their season this Saturday on RDS after our loss to the Rangers

Funny you should say that re the Spengler. Though I had no interest, for some reason my son took an interest in watching that when he was small, maybe 7 or 8 years old. Which I found delightful and surprising, since he usually followed my lead. As an adult, he has a great interest in all things European, spends a lot of time overseas, and still remarks upon the Spengler. He was near Milan last Xmas, and I said I bet you would really enjoy getting to the Spengler if you get the chance some year. Me, I still have no interest. :)

I would definitely go to the Spengler because the crowd is always into it. I see too many tournaments in Europe at all levels where the arena is half empty and there's no atmosphere. But the Spengler always rocks because it's club teams, not national teams (except for Team Canada)

Club team fans are more invested. Gold medals in shame tournaments like the Olympics prove nothing. Winning a league championship is an actual accomplishment.

Makes sense. I can see the attraction, and the location seems like it has a small town, winter feel to it that's perfect for such a tournament. I prefer the NHL playoffs more than international games too, maybe because its club teams. I guess its just, like many on this side probably, the European club teams do not hold my personal interest.
