KK Signs Offer Sheet From Canes/Habs Don't Match

Rumors out there that Dundon flat out ordered it done. Waddell had no choice.
It's not a bad move for Canes....they get a 21- year old winger/center....they will extend him at less than 6.1M on a multi-year contract. It's a win-win for them since he doesn't need to be their saviour franchise center.

For Habs, even this year we would have needed KK to become that 1-2C....we would have just continued to screw up his development. It's actually a win-win for both teams....

I'm ok with losing KK....

I'm not ok with how we develop our youth, or how we go about doing business.

Case in point: Canes wanted KK, they overbid to make sure they got him. Unlike the Habs who made a soft puff offer sheet for Aho.

If we really wanted Aho, you overbid....9-10M offer sheet. A franchise 1C, clearly worth it....you over pay. WTF, how do we do business is insanely stupid.

Imagine Aho-Suzuki as your duo for next 10-15 years....complain all you want about overpaying for KK at 6.1, but they made sure they got him.

Habs are the type of franchise that would have made an offer sheet of 7M for McDavid, while other teams are offering 10-12M
Offer sheets only work for tier III and below players with a significant overpayment like Penner - even if Canes had offered Suzuki $9M Habs would’ve matched, just as Canes would’ve matched any Aho offer

Bottom line: Habs did not believe KK would be a $6.1M talent in the next 2-3 seasons.

Only time will tell if their projection was erroneous

yes...but getting Aho solves almost all his problems in 1 move....

I never understood why billionaires hire guys with high school education to run their multi-billion dollar businesses. There must be a reason Julien Brisebois is doing great in Tampa....most GMs are clueless, they react instead of being pro-active. Bergevin always reacts, never plans ahead
Bergevin is the kind of guy that Geoff Molson wishes he could be like. He's a billionaire but he's also a guy who played hockey at a somewhat competitive level in college and probably had dreams of playing in the show. Getting to hang around a jock's jock like Bergy allows him to pretend.

In a redraft of all these players (1981-2013), who do you take first ?

Feels like a fight between Scott Niedermayer, Pat Lafontaine, Toews, and Sedin

I just don't know what the Canes will do with KK. As inconsistent as he's been at center, he's been completely out of his element on the wing.
Additionally, the short off-season I would think isn’t exactly conducive to strength building / training - but I’m no expert.

Putting aside the fact that I felt he was a bad pick at no. 3 from the get go, I still would have matched the OS. MB had better hope that his evaluation of KK as of September 2022 was the correct one or this one will be hard to live down for him . . . unless Dvorak turns out be a real gem, which seems unlikely.
