But isn't that the whole point of the Charter? Popular opinion can't override rights...unless you're Quebec.
sure that's why the decision was judicially reviewed even though it was moot.

but as you say, "popular opinion" seems not to always care about Charter rights. which I think is the case here.

plus, the way Dougie and Francois have been using the notwithstanding clause (and being reelected), maybe folks care less about Charter rights than they ought to...

or, phrased differently, I think Trudeau's decision was popular, even if what it did was unconstitutional.

Yeah, this is a fairly accurate description of my voting intentions. I have no enthusiasm for Trudeau or the Libs, but Poilievre would be infinitely worse. So I’ll vote for whichever non-CPC candidate in my riding has the best shot at winning.

Hopefully the same scenario will play out across the country. With the NDP vote largely collapsing to the Liberals (except for areas where the NDP candidate has a decided advantage) and then likely with the Bloc sweeping Quebec again.

And the best possible scenario might be a Poilievre minority “win”. Where it’s a poor enough showing that Trudeau & Singh resign and the Libs & NDP have a refresh. But where Poilievre falls well short of a majority and can’t find any governing partners willing to prop up his minority government.
Any CPC win opens the door to shenanigans like proroguing Parliament like Harper did and ruling by fiat. It also would give oxygen to the worst elements of society, mostly the knuckle-dragging inbreds on the prairies.

Well, the legal nuance was violating charter rights.

They could have just dealt with it without doing that. Trudeau has had a number of own goals that may lead us to PeePee land. Just step down already.
The only rights that were violated were the rights of the citizens of Ottawa who were held hostage by these fucking hillbillies. And since neither the OPS nor the OPP seemed interested in doing their jobs because they were too busy taking selfies with Klownvoyers and allowing them to run jerry cans full of diesel past the cordon so that the truckers could keep rolling coal, I'd say that the Feds were well within their rights to impose order. The municipal and provincial authorities who should have done it had abdicated their responsibility by the time the EA was invoked. The now fired Chief of the OPS was a CPC donor and Doug Ford is Doug Ford.

The court can go fuck itself, as far as I'm concerned and I'm willing to bet every citizen of Ottawa is on my side.

@leafman101 this is why we have an independent judiciary :p

Trudeau Sr. invoking the War Measures Act in 1970 was probably technically a violation of the Charter too (had the Charter existed back then) but everyone in the nation aside from FLQ sympathizers applauded his decision. In JT's wingtips, I'd have dealt with the Klownvoy a lot sooner and with more malice aforethought, especially when they tried to block international borders and started issuing MOU's. At that point they'd be learning who runs this bitch and who doesn't. JT let them off light.

resolved peacefully without further incident? hope you're okay.
I'm fine but it was quite a thing when we heard active shooter at City Hall. Was in a virtual meeting with a few ppl that left the meeting because there was a fire alarm (looks like the fire started from a molatov cocktail).

Appears to be no injuries and the guy was arrested.

I'm glad it all worked out okay but that's really terrifying. Hope they take care of all the employees there after that. Everyone must be pretty shaken up.
